Title: Night Photography
Post by: ByGrace on August 10, 2003, 09:10:02 PM
Last August on a hot summer night, I took the opportunity to take a picture of the Church that my wife and I were married in 26 years ago.

Thanks
It is located in a town called Livermore, The church building is in the Mission Style, (I do not attend this Church), but it has a beautiful look especially at night.
I had about a 10 seconds shutter speed, with a full wide F stop.

Thanks Pinkie
It was fun to take, except for the two large stray dogs that came out of the shadows when I was out taking theses photos and one of them began to be aggressive towards me until it got startled and allowed me to slip away to an area that it was not able to see me.  Thus, the slightly down side to night photography.

Oh, my!  What a wonderful piece of photography!  I love this photo!  I giggled though to think of the two stray dogs wandering into your space!  LOL  Glad you didn't have any trouble with them.

Hi Pat
Welcome back from Vacation, (I believe you were on one?).
Actually, the dog that looked like a Rotwieler began a stand-off with me with a growl like bark and a stare. I was concerned that the two stray dogs together may decide to have some prey-chasing fun, so I used my remote car lock to flash the lights on my vehicle that was near the dogs, this got his their attention, allowing me to slip around the corner until they left.

Hi., ByGrace - Thats really is a terrific shot.
Now wern't you smart to use your cars remote to scare off those dogs.  Wonder if I would have "kept my head" to think of doing that.....hmmm; probably not.  I think the wrong thing to do would be to run., and thats probably what I would have done....I'd have been so scared!  Glad you wern't!

Yes, ByGrace, I was on vacation along with Judy McKenna and Etta Sue from Christian Photographers.  We were in Calgary, Alberta to a "SeniorNet Bash".

I'm so glad that you had the presence of mind to do what you had to do with your remote key to the car.  I'm not sure I would have thought of doing that.

Hey this is a very nice picture! I agree with the others the tones were great. I'm glad you didn't get dog-bit.

Have any of you had similar experiences like this while shooting? I had a couple. Once when in the North East in a major city, I was shooting some night photography with a 4x5. I had my darkcloth over my head, and as I was setting up to take the shot, a couple of young men came walking up. I was sure that I was going to get robbed, but I heard one of them say..."Leave him alone, he must be a priest or something. You can't bother a priest man" I'm thankful for that darkcloth. As they passed, I made the sign of the cross, and said to them, "Bless you my child". After they left, I took a few shots and left...quickly.

One other time, I was in a Nat'l Forest down in Southern Indiana. I had my 4x5 set up and was waiting for the light to get just right. I was setting there on the ground when all of the sudden the hair stood up on the back of my neck. I turned around, and there about five yards away was a big ol' Coyote! He was just setting there watching me, so I nodded to him and just turned back around. When I looked again in a few minuets, he was gone. I never heard him come, and I never heard him leave.   :o

I haven't done much night photography with my digital, but after taking some sunset shots in Sedona on vacation I think I might. I was impressed that I was able to shoot photos of the moon with nothing more that a tree to lean up against.

My my, Times a slip'n by. I Posted the night Photo of the church in August of 2003, I guess I ought to reply to the comments since my last reply in 2004, (better late than never).

Thank you for the kind comments: This church is where My Wife and I were married 30 years ago when we were Catholics (we attend a reformed Baptist Church now). It's in our home town located about 40 miles east of San Francisco.
The town has a lot of history including some old Spanish land grants, thus the Spanish influence of the architecture. This is how it looks every time we drive by at night, and it is a beautiful building.

This is also reflected in the Veterans hospital located in the hills above our town, you can see the Spanish style influence in its design. Sadly the Feds are considering closing it, yet many of us believe that it would be a perfect place for recovering soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan: here is a photo of the grounds, as you can see they have the natural "the warm blooded lawn mowers" in addition to wild turkeys that also roam the grounds (the Deer were the only ones that showed up for my Photo Sessions).

Take Care
