Title: Prayer for my sister
Post by: Samantha on November 14, 2005, 06:10:21 PM
Hi all,
My sister just called and said she has been diagnosed with cancer in her pelvic area.  Will know more about what kind and what type of treatment if any after seeing dr on this wednesday.

Please pray for her.   Not sure about her salvation, I know she believes in  God but don't know about whether or not she has been saved.  We lost both parents and a brother to cancer.

She is only 54.

Thanks,
Samantha

Will update when I know more.

Most definitely, Samantha ... I am praying for your sister.  I also have lost family members to cancer, I understand your heart.  Most important is that she come to know -- really KNOW -- Jesus as her Savior and Lord.  I pray you and all the family will be surrounded with His love and peace during this time of uncertainty and waiting.

Oh God our Father, I pray for Samantha'a sister.  I pray You'll powerfully move in her heart, first of all.  I pray You'll acquaint her CLOSELY with Jesus Christ.  Then I pray You'll give the doctors true insight and wisdom to deal with this disease, and that she will know Your hand upon her.  And I pray for Samantha as well, that You will make her know more and more of the fullness of Your love and grace.  Through Jesus my Lord.

Update:

She has bone cancer in her hip area.  Having biopsy done today or tomorrow to find out more.  My brother in law said he thought it was bad, because I felt she wasn't telling me everything.

Keep praying, please.

Thanks to all of you who are praying for my sister.  I spoke to her yesterday and she seems to be doing alright.  Still in quite a bit of pain, but the dr's are trying to keep her medicated for that.  Seems the worst time is during radiation treatment, all the moving about of her hip.

She said after radiation she would be having chemo - 1 treatment every 3 wks, but not sure for how long.  She sounded very optimistic, so much as she wants to take her granddaughter christmas shopping in 2 wks and come and see me after that!

I did not get to visit with her very long as my family was getting over a stomach virus and we all still felt bad, but I wanted to see her anyway, and she didn't even catch it from us.

Please keep remembering her when you think of it.  I know deep down she is still scared about all of this.

Thanks,
Samantha

I talked with my sister Linda today.  She has finished the radiation treaments and they found that her hip socket has cracked from the tumor.  That explains a lot of her pain.  They changed her medication so that helped that.  She started chemo last week, but with just a few drops of the medicine in her iv, she had an allergic reaction, and they will be trying something else on Monday.  She said the nurses said they had just finished working with another woman who was allergic to the same medicine she was.  God is in control of everything, isn't he?!

Her husband was in a small plane crash back in 83 and she had to take care of him during his recovery, and now he is taking care of her.  She said she thanked him for all he has done for her so far, and he said well you took care of me. She said, we were a lot younger then!

Please continue to pray for her, that the pain will be bearable.  She doesn't feel like she is going to die from all of this, but the pain is miserable right now.

Thanks,
Samantha

:( update:  My sister has been is the hospital since saturday nite.  Her potassium is low and they have been giving her that plus she has had 2 pints of blood, and on top of that, they think she had a heart attack one evening while she has been there.  They can't do a heart cath until her platelets are better so she is taking medicine for that, too.  She was so hoping to go home before Christmas but now it will be sometime after Monday.

Please remember her when you can.  She told me today that when they told her she had cancer, she went to her car and cried, and then she really wanted our Mom ( who has been deceased 5 yrs )  No matter how old you are you always want your momma when you are sick!

Hopefully going Christmas day to see her in hospital.

Thanks,
Samantha

Well, I went to see my sister yesterday.  Good news first.  The pain in her hip is getting better, instead of 15 pills a day for pain she is down to about 4. :cheer:  Bad news, she did  have a heart attack, and while we were there she started having chest pains again and they gave her 3 nitro tabs to put under her tongue within 15 minutes. That was scary to me.  Then they came and did an EKG and all of that.  Still don't know much until they can do a heart cath.

Please keep praying for her, I think she is running low on hope right now.

Thanks,
Samantha

Post by: Samantha on December 28, 2005, 10:53:31 PM
Hi Pat,

I'm doing ok other than not being able to handle looking at her.  She really favors our mother a lot, especially since she has lost a lot of weight being sick and all.  And her chest pain episode really got to me.  If my kids had not have been there, I might have lost it.  Our oldest brother died of cancer at 35, our parents died from cancer 5 yrs apart and they both were 73, my sister thinks she is setting a new age to over come of 54.

Our family is quite dysfunctional, I have another sister and brother who don't have much to do with Linda, (money issues, they borrowed from her and didn't pay back so they avoid her) I've told my other sister who even though she is older than me, she is the most immature one.  She won't even call her to talk to her.  My brother I haven't told yet, she doesn't want me to yet.  If she gets worse, I will anyway.

Those two sibling live in Michigan, while Linda and I live in Mississippi about 2 hours apart.

That was probably more than you wanted to know, but,,,,,.

She said she is tired of being sick and tired :'(  I just wish there was something I could do for her to help her.

Thanks for asking.

Samantha

No, Samantha, that's not more than we wanted to know.  Whatever is in your heart and whatever you want to say is just what we want to hear.

I don't think many people have "functional" families.  I mean, we function, but could be called dysfunctional.  My sisters and I laugh about our dysfunctional family.

I'm so sorry that your family is going through this now.  In times like this, when it's a life and death situation, things seem to surface again that have been buried for awhile.  I know it happened when my brother died.

You are loved here.  This is a safe place to just spill out your heart.  We'll just take up your words and your meaning and lift you to the Lord.  He loves you more than anyone ever could. :)  I'll keep praying for you and your sister.  Nita

Samantha, I also totally agree with Nita in terms of "functional" families.  While it is hard for you to look at your sister perhaps due to her physical changes, please don't ever forget that she is the same person you have always known but needs more attention and reassurance that you still love her and are there for her.

My sister has been is hopsital for 2 weeks now.  Since Christmas night she has been in ICU.  They found out she is allergic to the Heparin they had been giving her.  Her blood levels are almost normal so she should be able to have the heart cath on Tuesday.  She has bad blood clots in her leg, my brother in law said that it is swollen like a balloon.

They are weaning her off of her pain meds due to her hallucinating.  I dont even think she knew I was on the phone with her.

Hoping she get to come home at the end of the coming up week.

Great big "THANK YOU" to all who are praying for her.

Samantha   (thank you all for your words of encouragement! :aaah:)

Well, I spoke with my Bro in law last night.  He is looking for an attorney.  The hospital has really messed up my sister with the Heparin that they gave her.  And now they won't do anything about either problem, the heart or the cancer, so she is in limbo, and really depressed.  He said when she is stable enough to go home he is going to try to take her back to Michigan to the U of M hospital.  He just has to figure out how to transport her.  The blood clots are now severe in her leg, and they could be all through her body.

I called her yesterday afternoon and she just cried and cried.  My sister is not the type to do that, at least not in front of me.

Please, keep praying for her, and for her husband.  I think the stress is getting to him.

Thanks again,
Samantha

Well, I'm back.  My sister has too many things going wrong for her at this time.  They think the cancer has spread to her brain, but with some kind of filter that they implanted in her to reduce blood clots, they can't do an MRI to find out for sure.  They did a CT scan yesterday and it shows some things in her brain, but they said they could be from strokes also.  She also has new pain in her knee on the same side as the cancer in her hip.  She is in a great deal of pain and cant be still.  I've never seen anyone in as much pain as she is.  I don't think either of my parents hurt like she is.

She has a living will w/DNR and does not want any feeding tubes either.  It's all my bro in law can do to get her to eat.

Her son is coming back Thursday to be with her for a while and I hope that will cheer her up some.

Please, when you think of it, pray for her,  I know God can heal her one way or another.

 :cheer: Update   :cheer:

Spoke with my bro in law last night. He said she was feeling better and doing better.  The swelling of her legs due to the blood clots has gone down a great deal and they removed half of her IV's.  Plus they lowered the amount of pain medicine she needs, and she is eating more than she was.  She was in what they called special care unit, step down from ICU, and sometime today she will go to a regular room!  In his words, "Its great to get some good news for once!"

The pain in her knee was due to blood clots and they still think she has cancer in the brain but she started radiation on the whole brain Wednesday, and will have 10 treatments in all for the brain and they are doing the hip again. They found cancer on the ball of her hip this last time instead of just the socket.  But the pain is better for her and for that I am praising the Lord for!  He said the Dr. said she might get to go home in a few days.

Thank you all so much for praying for her.

Samantha

Well, good news only lasts for a little while.  The tumor in her lung which was barely visible on a scan is now 1 inch in diameter.  My sister didn't take that news very well.  She is using her pain medicine pump to keep numb so she don't have to think about it.

I did find out she is saved, but not baptized, but that is not a major thing for me.

They are going to ask the dr today what he feels is how much time she has left.  As she put it, its time to get her affairs in order.

My bro in law is upset because he felt like she was eating pretty good this week and she still managed to lose 5 lbs.

Please keep praying for her.  If its Gods will for her to go on, let it not be too painful for her.

Thanks,
Samantha

:'( 6 months or less is what the dr is saying about my sister.  Her cancer in the lung is growing aggresively and is already reducing her breathing in that lung.

They are going to start radiation and Maybe chemo (have to talk with her son about the chemo) tomorrow.  With that combo they said 6 months - 2  yrs.

My oldest brother had liver cancer that spread in 3months before he died.

Please pray for my brother in law, that he may have the wisdom to do what is right for her.

Beneath the Cross of Jesus  (http://www.christianphotographers.com/sounds/beneath-the-cross-of-jesus.mid)
(Click to hear music)

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Galatians 6:14

Words: Elizabeth C. Clephane, 1868; published posthumously in the Family Treasury, a Scottish Presbyterian magazine, in 1872, titled "Breathing on the Border." The magazine's editor, W. Arnot, wrote: These lines express the experiences, the hopes and the longings of a young Christian lately released. Written on the very edge of life, with the better land fully in view of faith, they seem to us footsteps printed on the sands of time, where these sands touch the ocean of Eternity. These footprints of one whom the Good Shepherd led through the wilderness into rest, may, with God's blessing, contribute to comfort and direct succeeding pilgrims.

Music: "St. Christopher," Frederick C. Maker, in the Bristol Tune Book, 1881

Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand,
The shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land;
A home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way,
From the burning of the noontide heat, and the burden of the day.

O safe and happy shelter, O refuge tried and sweet,
O trysting place where Heaven's love and Heaven's justice meet!
As to the holy patriarch that wondrous dream was given,
So seems my Savior's cross to me, a ladder up to heaven.

There lies beneath its shadow but on the further side
The darkness of an awful grave that gapes both deep and wide
And there between us stands the cross two arms outstretched to save
A watchman set to guard the way from that eternal grave.

Upon that cross of Jesus mine eye at times can see
The very dying form of One Who suffered there for me;
And from my stricken heart with tears two wonders I confess;
The wonders of redeeming love and my unworthiness.

I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place;
I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of His face;
Content to let the world go by to know no gain or loss,
My sinful self my only shame, my glory all the cross.

My bro in law called last night.  They are not going to do anymore radiation on Linda, they said it was too painful for her.  He is going to take her home on hospice in about 2 days.  They (nurses) said 2 weeks would be a long life for her after that.

He just wants her last days to be comfortable, as do I.  Pray for him please, as he has done all he knew to do to get her better.

Thanks to all of you who have prayed for us and Linda, may God richly bless each one of you.

Thank you Pat and everyone.

The dr. seems to "think" that she had a stroke which has caused her spiral downward.  She is just lying in bed, can't speak, other than yes, no, and grunts.  She still has the blood clots, and we don't know about the cancer anymore.  Her short term memory is about gone, so in some ways that is a blessing, to not remember the cancer treatments and such, but my bro in law has to keep telling her why she is in the shape she is in.  He chose to tell her she had a stroke.

Pray for him, when you think of it.  And please pray for me, that I'll be able to go see her more often.

I spoke with my bro in law last night.  He said he didn't think it would be much longer.  Her color has changed (those who have dealt with cancer know what I'm talking about) and a few other signs.  Keep him in your prayers please, his name is Randy.  He really sounded defeated on the phone.
Thanks,

Samantha

Thank you all so much for praying for my sister.  My bro in law phoned me while I was in church to tell me he thought she might not make it through today or tomorrow.  My prayer now is for her to not be in any pain anymore and for him to be able to let her go.  They've been married 28 years.  My heart is broken for him.   I know I will miss her but I know that we will have a grand reunion one day up in heaven, so I have that to look forward to!

If you come through here today and read this, all I ask is that you send a quick prayer to God for her and him, and I appreciate the prayers so much already.

Thanks,
Samantha

Samantha I am praying now.   :'(  I know the pain of the loss of a loved one and I know it leaves such an empty place in your heart and life.  I agree that there will be a grand reunion one day, but I also know there has to be a time of adjusting to life without her here on earth. I pray it will be a time of drawing closer to the God of all comfort.

You ask prayer for your brother-in-law, and I definitely am praying for him to know the peace that passes all understanding even in the midst of sorrow, but I also pray for you to find a place to snuggle safe  in the arms of our Loving Father during this time of transition and loss.

I talked with Randy today.  He told me about when she died.  He said he told her that he loved her and then he recited the Lords Prayer and when he finished she passed away.  I get glory bumps thinking about that.  God is so good, praise his wonderful name!

Thank you all once again for your prayers for us all.
