Psalm 87
Once the temple was built, Jerusalem became Israel's center of worship - the center and source for God's communication with His people. God chose to make it so. When the psalmist writes that "The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob," he's just saying that it was THE place to meet with God, the place God Himself had chosen to make His presence known, the place from which to bless the rest of "Jacob" (Israel), and, for that matter, all the nations of the earth. The result was that anyone, Israelite or foreigner, who was born in that city of God, could think of him/herself as specially blessed.
In our own day, not a special city, but the Church of our Lord Jesus Christ has become the place of God's communication with His people. All who are "born in her," who are reborn by the Holy Spirit through the operations of the Gospel, are indeed registered in the the holy city!
All our spiritual life and strength flow forth from that Zion, and the Church of our Lord Jesus Christ should therefore be the source of joy to every Christian. We need to prize and to hold in high esteem the Church of the living God! It's not that the church you or I attend is perfect, but it is simply God's chosen medium of communication today. Do you attend in order to meet with the living God?
This was a different Psalm, Alan.
I read it and wondered what it was saying to me.. Then after reading your words above, it certainly opened it for me.
Thanks you for these.
May our Father bless it to His glory in you!
