Hi guys, I was wondering how I could have made this shot a little better. Thanks.

I think I would have cropped the top 1/3 off to get the viewer to focus on the action.  My eye immediately went to see what was going on in the background.

That is where my eye was drawn too.  Before I read Gary's post I thought "crop".  Gary seems I am learning!

I agree with the suggestion to crop.  Good action shot.

I agree.   And I'd have applied a bit of tone-mapping to get more detail into the key parts of the image.   And just a bit of rotation.   The result plays up that decisive moment, and makes it more dramatic.   It's a real winner; two very strong diagonal lines meeting at the puck.  Super.

It's true, although you captured the excitement, the background is distracting. Here is my suggestion for your next action shot. If the motion you are covering is a group of players moving from side to side, it is always a good thing to shoot in horizontal frame. That way you don't crop out important details. But if it is a single player skating towards you, then a vertical shot in continuos focus is the best choice to nail that award-winning shot.

Action shot, to me is the most challenging. One must be good in reading the action before it happens. A good anticipation is surely a plus, it helps in the composition.  A quick reflex on your part, coupled with a fast-focus camera are the two important elements in photojournalism and action photography.

And I must add, if this is the only shot you have and you really wanted it to look right, then use some magic . . ..... Photoshop it!!
