Morning Devotional

He's Everything to Us!

"Thomas said to Him, 'Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?'  Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me.'"

Jesus had told His disciples that they knew both where He was going and how to get there.  But Thomas was sure none of the disciples knew either one.  But then Jesus gave them the all-important explanation:  "I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me."

At least now they would understand that He looked forward to going to the Father.  What about the rest of His explanation?  Jesus reveals here that He is their way - and our way - to the Father.  There is no way any of us can come to the Father on our own merit.  We truly merit only eternal damnation.  But all who call on Him to save them can and will come to the Father on the merit of Jesus Christ.  You have His word on it!

Not only so, but He is also the "truth" and the "life."  It just means that knowing Jesus IS knowing the Father - He is the "truth" about the Father.  The Father's love, for instance, is fully manifested in His Son on the Cross. Then, having come to the Father through the merit of Christ, you will eternally have Christ's own standing before Him!  But, having His standing, you'll also have His life by His Spirit within you - He's your life!  And you'll still be trusting Him because of His Spirit within, even up to that wonderful lmoment when He comes for you at last!!

Beneath the Cross of Jesus
(Click to hear music)

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Galatians 6:14

Words: Elizabeth C. Clephane, 1868; published posthumously in the Family Treasury, a Scottish Presbyterian magazine, in 1872, titled "Breathing on the Border." The magazine's editor, W. Arnot, wrote: These lines express the experiences, the hopes and the longings of a young Christian lately released. Written on the very edge of life, with the better land fully in view of faith, they seem to us footsteps printed on the sands of time, where these sands touch the ocean of Eternity. These footprints of one whom the Good Shepherd led through the wilderness into rest, may, with God's blessing, contribute to comfort and direct succeeding pilgrims.

Music: "St. Christopher," Frederick C. Maker, in the Bristol Tune Book, 1881

Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand,
The shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land;
A home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way,
From the burning of the noontide heat, and the burden of the day.

O safe and happy shelter, O refuge tried and sweet,
O trysting place where Heaven's love and Heaven's justice meet!
As to the holy patriarch that wondrous dream was given,
So seems my Savior's cross to me, a ladder up to heaven.

There lies beneath its shadow but on the further side
The darkness of an awful grave that gapes both deep and wide
And there between us stands the cross two arms outstretched to save
A watchman set to guard the way from that eternal grave.

Upon that cross of Jesus mine eye at times can see
The very dying form of One Who suffered there for me;
And from my stricken heart with tears two wonders I confess;
The wonders of redeeming love and my unworthiness.

I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place;
I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of His face;
Content to let the world go by to know no gain or loss,
My sinful self my only shame, my glory all the cross.

Larry Hanna

Hi everyone.  Al, a very good devotional and a good reminder as to where we must stay focused.

I got up fairly early today as have several things to do and will be gone a good part of the day, at least all morning.  I have to take Pat to the chiropractor for an 8:45 am appointment and then get my Saturn to the dealer to be checked out on the security system that sometimes keeps me from starting the car.  Then have a couple of other errands to run up at the mall area.  I know that will be all I will want to do for today.

Ruth Ann, the flannel bedding sounds nice.  I also cannot sleep well if I am cold and I don't seem to generate much body heat.  I think a lot of it has to do with all the heart medicines I take, which include several related to blood pressure even though I have never had high blood pressure.

Pat, it would be nice to speak with you on the phone.  However, do you have a webcam?  If so we could do a web video conference in MSN IM.  It works very well and saves a lot of typing.

Sonja, it is getting that time of year when sunburn can be a problem.  Sure your kids enjoy being outside however.

Janet, glad you were able to talk with Curtis.  I will have to check out your new photos.

Marilyn, it always seems like it rains when you get your car washed.  Mine should get washed again today at Saturn as they do that to every car they service.  It isn't the world's best car wash but it better than nothing.

Alma, glad to see you have some someone to help with the care that you are providing.  That should free you up a bit more.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Marilyn

May 16 - The Writing of God

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables" (Exodus 32:16).

In this verse is the first occurrence in the Bible of the word "writing" and, appropriately enough, it is speaking of "the writing of God" rather than the writings of men. The reference of course is to the two tables of the law, the Ten Commandments, "written with the finger of God" (Exodus 31:18), and rewritten on a second set of stone tables to replace the first, once they were shattered (Exodus 34:1).

All Scripture is divinely inspired, but the Ten Commandments were divinely inscribed! This testimony of their unique importance is a sobering condemnation of any who ignore them or distort their meaning (including the one referring to the six-day creation in Exodus 20:11).

But there is another writing of God—this one recorded in the New Testament, one of even greater personal significance to the Christian: "Ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ . . . written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart" (II Corinthians 3:3). No longer an external standard divinely engraved in stone by the finger of God, but an internal conviction inscribed in the heart by the Spirit of God! "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them" (Hebrews 10:16).

This remarkable writing of God's law in our hearts and minds has been accomplished because Christ came not "to destroy, but to fulfill" the law (Matthew 5:17) and "hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us" (Galatians 3:13). Now, with the law in our hearts, we have become epistles of God, "known and read of all men" (II Corinthians 3:2), and it is vital that the writing read true and clear through our lives. HMM

Good Morning to one and all who will enter in today.

It looks like the sun may come out for at least a little while today.

I got a call yesterday that Pastor Oliver  from the church  in Lucerne Valley is in the hospital in ICU with pneumonia, he has been there since last Thursday. That family has sure had it over the last two years. Many of you know what the devil has been doing to them. Victor now has been transferred to State Prison and he doesn't even know that his father is in the hospital. There is no way  to contact him other than snail mail for the next 90 days.

Al wonderful devotionalthis morning, Thank you.

Larry Thank you for keeping us informed of all the steps you are going through  prior to your heart transplant. I will be praying for you all the way brother.

Where was Etta Sue yesterday? I missed her cheery posts and animations.

Pat
are you getting better?

Thanks, Marilyn.  It is nice to be missed.

The 50th Anniversary celebration was wonderful.  They know so many people and I think they invited everyone they know.  I got to see people I hadn't seen for years.  Talking about quilts, their DIL made them a king-size quilt that has pictures of all over it.  Probably 50 pictures of the kids etc.  Beautiful!!!

Then yesterday I worked the lights at church.  I am still fighing this cold and probably had 10 Halls cough drops at church.  I was in the mezzanine and any noise from the mezzanine can be heard floor level.  I ate out for lunch and when I got home I called Ivalou.  I asked her if she remembeedr we were to go to Charlene's All Daughter's Banquet?  Yes, she remembered.  So I told her if I didn't call her by 4 p.m. to call me and wake me up.  I was exhausted so I took a nap.  I woke in time and called Ivalou.

The Banquet was great.  The theme was 'The Old Days'.  A narrator told about each decade from 1900 to 2000 and kids/adults came on stage wearing clothing from those decades.  The flapper girl was the cutest.  Also the boy with a Leisure suit and platform shoes!  So everything was decorated with 'old stuff'...really brought back memories.  Charlene's mother was surprisingly honored for being the church pianist/organist for 50 plus years.  Charlene put together family pictures to show 'all the daughters' on the overhead.

As I said, I am still fighting this cold.  BUT work has to be done.  So as soon as I get caught up, I am going out to mow the yard.  Tonight is Small Groups Bible Study so that will be nice just to talk with friends.

Etta Sue, I admire your grit for "keepin' on keepin' on"--- but please don't overdo!  You do NOT want a backset with that cold.  The banquet with the "Old Days" theme sounds lovely.  We are looking and asking for ideas for a theme for next year's banquet, as after 20 years, are running low on ideas.  Of course, since I am just a youngster, I haven't been involved that long with it!  ;)

We went for our workout, and Kristi had bought an old three-wheeled bicycle for anyone who wanted to ride.  She wanted me to try it, so I did.  I never had a bike when I was a kid, so I'm not too good on them.  This one pulls to the right pretty hard, but after several circles around the parking lot, I got the hang of it and went on out and around the block.  It was a good warm up!  Then I did all my weight training.  Beth is gaining strength from her workout, and we are hopeful she will regain the ability to walk without the walker.  Kristi keeps encouraging her, saying "Come on, Beth!  One New York, two New York!"  ;D ;D

After lunch I will go to take down the quilts and gossamer so I will get plenty of exercise today!  Darrel is starting to grout the tile, so after being up on a ladder, I will be down on the floor!  Fun, fun, fun.   (NOT!)

Al, I liked your devotional today.

Janet, your posts always make me so tired.  You work more than any one person I know.  Well, maybe except for Marilyn. :)

Love you ladies.

Etta, I'll echo what Janet said, don't push yourself too hard.  It's taken you this long to get over that crazy thing, don't want you to get it back!!!

I've been looking for a "show" theme to do with my students at the Sr. Citizen Center.  They have done a fashion show before and thought that was a lot of fun.  A "Decade in Review" might be fun too!  Thanks for the idea!!!

I'm off to my parttime J-O-B.  I'll check in later, hopefully!

Wow.  where is everyone.

Maybe I need to start an argument just to get people to start posting. hahahahaha

Janet

Hi Karma!  It has been pretty slow here for some time.  Maybe we DO need to "shake things up", ya think? ;)

Now, about my postings making you tired............... :P............I'm kinda tired now, too.  But we got all the quilts taken down, and the other decorations as well.  Now, if I had my work at home done.........

Hi, friends,

I'm in from work - possibly the drop in postings is because springtime is here and folks get pretty busy in the springtime.

It certainly is good to see y'all when I have time to get on the net!

Hello everyone, Here I am runny nose, itching eyes the whole shebang. I am NOT claiming a cold I am calling it my allergies because I don't want to have to take off work again for another 10 days. I just got caught up with  my payment schedules from my last cold and no work. I am taking taking the Airborne as well as using the Zicam swabs Hopefull I can kick it in a couple of days.

I am making another pot of Chicken soup with different ingredients this time but still a lot of curry. I seem to like a lot more curry when I don't feel well.

Going now.

FARTHER ALONG
(Click to hear music)

W. B. Stevens

Tempted and tried we're oft made to wonder
Why it should be thus all the day long.
While there are others living about us,
Never molested though in the wrong.
Farther along we'll know all about it,
Farther along we'll understand why;
Cheer up, my brother, live in the sunshine,
We'll understand it all by and by.

When death has come and taken our loved ones,
It leaves our home so lonely and drear;
Then do we wonder why others prosper,
Living so wicked year after year.
Farther along we'll know all about it,
Farther along we'll understand why;
Cheer up, my brother, live in the sunshine,
We'll understand it all by and by.

Faithful till death said our loving Master.
A few more days to labor and wait;
Toils of the road will then seem as nothing
As we sweep through the beautiful gate.
Farther along we'll know all about it,
Farther along we'll understand why;
Cheer up, my brother, live in the sunshine,
We'll understand it all by and by.

When we see Jesus coming in glory,
When He comes from His home in the sky;
Then we shall meet Him in that bright mansion
We'll understand it all by and by.
Farther along we'll know all about it,
Farther along we'll understand why;
Cheer up, my brother, live in the sunshine,
We'll understand it all by and by.

Good to see you in here, Pat.  That song just needs horses' clip-clopping along with it.

Yea, it is busy in the spring time.  And honestly, there are times I just don't have a lot to say.  Granted, that doesn't happen much, but . . .

<karmat the Mary Kay consultant looks in>  Janet, that lipstick in the new picture is YOU.  You go girl.  Looking good!!

Well, it is about time for Mr. Travis Acie to have a bath.  He played outside for the better part of the day and is dirt from head to toe.  My mom had some septic line work done, and they didn't fill it in good.  So, she got soem fill dirt and tried to fill it in.  Everytime Travis and/or his cousins (there was Travis and 3 others there today), they get the shovel and dig.  She's filled it in several times already. :)

Have a good night!!

Janet
