Morning Devotional...

Psalm 55

This psalm reflects back on a time of the very most extreme trouble for David. Things were so bad that His very life was in danger - And the worst of it was that there wasn't a thing he could do about it!  Not only so, but the enemy causing the trouble was in control even of Jerusalem, and the result was that there was iniquity and corruption even in the city of God!  To make matters as bad as they could be, all this was the work of a formerly close friend!

Later on, after the trouble was past and God had delivered him, David wrote this psalm for all among God's people who might experience betrayal at the hands of such "friends."

The scene isn't merely one of possible future trouble, but it's the scene of extreme and present danger.  It's one in which deliverance seems impossible and one in which a horrible end seems imminent.  Painting that scene, David sings, "My heart is severely pained within me, and the terrors of death have fallen upon me!"  he sings of a desire to escape, but no means to do so. He says, "I would fly away and be at rest.  Indeed, I would wander far off, and remain in the wilderness.  I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest (of trouble)."

And it was not only personal trouble that was in view, but it was  trouble for the entire covenant nation. The song therefore turns immediately to prayer for deliverance, not only for the singer, but for the people as well – with particular reference to their need for cleansing and righteousness as well as deliverance.  It's a prayer for the return of God's own kingdom rule and protection over every member of this very special people.

They needed deliverance from one who used to come with David and all the people to the morning worship - one who seemed to love God and was familiar to them all. But now this traitor has shown his true colors, so the request has to be that God will deal with him in judgement.  In minor-keyed dissonance and sorrow, the prayer has to ask God to "let death seize them; let them go down alive into hell, for wickedness is in their dwellings and among them!"

The next stanza deals with the desired deliverance itself, a deliverance that is going to have to come from God, because there isn't any other help to be found.  He sings, "As for me, I will call upon God, and the Lord shall save me.  Evening and morning and at noon I will pray, and cry aloud, and He shall hear my voice."  It's not the time for casual, ritualistic prayer – it's time for the only kind of prayer that will do - constant, fervent, and intense.

But the result of that kind of prayer to that kind of God is always triumph!  People who have experienced such deliverance can confidently say, "Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved!"  Then, relative to the traitor, he says, "But You, O God, shall bring them down to the pit of destruction.  Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in You!"

That's the answer!  It was the answer for David's greater Son our Lord Jesus Christ as well.  He was betrayed by a very close friend, but He has risen from the dead to sovereignly deliver each and every one of His people!  If you are His, then YOU will participate in His triumph!

Our Lord cares about each and every one of His people - today.

DOES JESUS CARE?
(Click to hear music)

Does Jesus care when my heart is pained
Too deeply for mirth or song,
As the burdens press, and the cares distress
And the way grows weary and long?

Refrain
Oh yes, He cares, I know He cares,
His heart is touched with my grief;
When the days are weary, the long nights dreary,
I know my Savior cares.

Does Jesus care when my way is dark
With a nameless dread and fear?
As the daylight fades into deep night shades,
Does He care enough to be near?

Refrain

Does Jesus care when I've tried and failed
To resist some temptation strong;
When for my deep grief there is no relief,
Though my tears flow all the night long?

Refrain

Does Jesus care when I've said "goodbye"
To the dearest on earth to me,
And my sad heart aches till it nearly breaks,
Is it aught to Him? Does He see?

Refrain

Carol

Al:  thanks for your devotions.  Yes, I do know that Jesus cares but it is always good to hear the good news again and again.  There are so many prayer concerns in our family - loss of job for almost a year, health concerns, breakup, and so forth.  It just seems overwhelming at times but in my heart I do know that the Lord is in control and it is so important for me to focus on that news daily.  Blessings to you and Marbeth!

Larry Hanna

Hi everyone.  Al, I also want to thank you for the devotional this morning.  As Carol says we know the Lord is in control even in the midst of the chaos.

Carol, what type of iPod do you have?  Is it the Touch?  I have to wonder if within every family structure there is not concerns for situations.  I know that is certainly true for my own family.  However, realize that God will see us all through these times.

Janet, if you ever want to use the Open Office in the way I described to Judy just let me know and I will send you an e-mail with more detail and illustrations of each step.  It sounds more difficult that it is.  Sorry that your tongue is giving you continued and more grief.  Does it affect your speech?

Marilyn, I watched the video I think you reference which was the doctor speaking.  There are some really bleak things ahead in the health field if all of this isn't repealed.  I heard on the news that colonoscopies may become unnecessary due to a new DNA test that may be available.  I also don't understand your doctor's advice about the Mammograms.

It is a really beautiful day here again.  I will go to my men's Monday luncheon at 1 pm and that will be it for today.  We did go to the gym this morning so got some walking in to start the week.

Janet

Oh my!  So many prayer concerns all around us; add in our nation's dire need for prayer, and if we weren't confident that the Lord is in control, we would be tempted to despair!  But He sees the end from the beginning, He will never leave us nor forsake us, and He wants the very best for his children.  How could one even face tomorrow without Jesus?

Sorry, Carol, after your reminder I did remember that you fell.  Hope you are better each day and the damage will soon be gone and forgotten.  I had that surgery on my tongue months ago, in which a wedge of it was removed in order to get rid of a large hemangioma which was continuing to grow.  But the doctor was really shocked to hear that it is still bothering me so much after all this time.  It is just a constant annoyance.  :(

Larry, you put me to shame!  I need to be exercising every day and now I haven't done it for several days because of this cold.  I thought it wasn't going to get a good hold on me, but last night was miserable, with coughing, etc.  This, too, will pass, and I am so thankful for excellent health.

We went to visit Beth after church yesterday.  She wanted me to write a note to John for her to enclose in a funny card she was sending him.She is always so good and patient, never demanding.  Bless her heart.

We plan a trip to Amarillo on Saturday to help celebrate Darrel's Mom's 98th birthday on Sunday.  She called a couple of weeks ago to wish her "baby" a happy 73rd birthday!  He is blessed with good genes!!

Well, today I took my trash to Kaye Don's and put their new phone books that were left on their front porch on the enclosed back porch, I went to the bank and cashed a check, I went to church and installed Sunday Plus on the laptop again, I went to Wendy's for a salad, I went to PC Help and got my external hard drive which they hadn't looked at AND I asked a question and the girl at the desk said if the tech came out to talk, I would be charged for it!!!l...after I have already spent almost $500 this month there...then I went swimming and then I went to Hobby Lobby to get yarn to make another baby afghan which won't be done by next Sunday so a card will be taken that says I.O.U one baby afghan!  Since being home I have showered off the chlorine.  And so far I don't see my old files on the external hard drive.  But something was there.  Remember I retrieved files they were numbered, not saved like I save pics, movies, music and such!  So I am backing up everything on the laptop to the external now including the files I got from the external.  Maybe that will work!  If not, then I am accepting that I lost all of it!

Tonight is church council meeting.  Tomorrow is voting and resting!  And crocheting.

Whew!

Only two month 'til 2011!!!

Etta Sue; I'm totally exhausted just READING your account of your busy day!!

I do hope you will be able to retrieve your files!

Hello EVeryone...

Well, I've had this bronchial problem for too long now!!!!

Today, I was out raking leaves, cutting back old peonies and other perennials that need it and Paul was also with me raking and putting the leaves into brown bags as I think that this is the week for it to be picked up.

We even were able to pick a few nice raspberries and enjoyed eating them.  That's really something to have rasps in November.

Thanks Alan for such a wonderful devotional and that hymn is one of my favorites.

Etta Sue, I wish you lived closer.  I bought an afghan kit to work on this winter for one of my children's 25th Anniversary and I'm stuck on the 2nd row!!!!  And I usually can work out any crochet pattern right to the most advanced but I'm having difficulty with American versus Canadian (British) directions.  It's the Award Winning Afghan from Herrshners.

Hi everyone.  Well election day in the USA has finally arrived and those most annoying commercials should disappear for awhile.  I have about worn out my mute button the TV remote during this election season.  I expect to stay up late tonight watching the returns.

It is suppose to be a rainy day today with the high of 61 degrees.  My good friend from Maryland will be visiting with us this morning and we will go out to lunch.  I don't think he will be here all day long as talking all day becomes very tiring.  Unbeknown to me Pat had written to him to let him know that an all day visit was just too much and he was very gracious and checked to see if I was up to having him visit at all.  Thankfully I am continuing to feel good but do rest every afternoon, if at all possible.

Pat, good to see you posting.  I would think the raking and cleaning the yard would not be good for your shoulder or bronchial problem.

Etta Sue, it sure sounds like you got taken by that computer repair firm.  You could have purchased a new laptop and had money left over.  Did you get any software when you bought the external hard drive that you installed on your computer?  If so, have you installed it again on the laptop as that should have a restore program.  There had to be a way to retrieve your files.  Have you contacted the company that made the external drive?  The problem you are having is very troubling and should be solvable.  Did you by any chance use the backup program that is a part of Windows XP or 7?

Janet, it sounds like rest is more important now than exercise until you recover from your cold.  Beth sounds like such a kind and gentle person and I am sure she appreciates what you and others do for her.  Darrel is so fortunate to still have his mother.

Etta Sue

Larry ~ Yes, I have the recovery DVD that came with the laptop but didn't discover it until I already had the laptop Windows re-installed.  No, there was nothing that came with the external other than a small paragraph telling you to plug the USB into the external and then into the USB port on your computer.  Duh!  All the other instructions were online.  And yes, I have my photos, videos and music BUT they are like they were all thrown in a drawer with no labels or dates on them.  I will have to watch and listen to all the videos and music to rename the files.  Same with photos.  I have no dates or names on them.  But I am slowly putting them back in folders.  Then I am going to burn them to DVD's and start from scratch again!  Maybe by Spring weather!!

I am off to go vote and to take back 3 skeins of yarn and purchase 4.  I don't like variegated for this baby afghan.  Pat ~ Wish you were closer also.  I would love to help you with your instructions.  Could you scan them and email them to me?  Then we can IM and discuss it.

And I couldn't shut off my head last night so got up and went back to bed at 4am!!

Yes, today we vote, and (I HOPE) tomorrow we rejoice!!  The worst ads we have right now are about our Kansas Attorney General's race--both are not nice ads, and they come on every few minutes, until we are sick of them!  Ugh.

Yes, both Darrel and I are fortunate to still have our mothers, both still with very sharp minds and memories.  I pray we have both inherited those genes!  Beth is kind and gentle, and thoughtful, too.  She was telling me the other day that she wished she could become a surrogate mother for someone who wants a baby!  Oh, my!  Of course, she knows that is a pipe-dream, but she has always loved babies so much.  That was one of her biggest disappointments in life, knowing she would never be a mother.  If she hadn't become disabled, she planned to adopt.  But God knows, and though we don't understand, He has reasons for the way Beth's life has turned out.  The most important thing is she Loves God and Jesus lives in her heart.

The housekeeper is here for a couple of hours, then Darrel and I will go cast our votes.  I have had five people call me to ask for whom they should vote, and pray I gave them the best choices!  My friends know that I keep up with things on the political front.

Larry, may God bless your visit with your friend today and you will not get too tired.  When we get home (to heaven) I want to come over for a long chat with you and Pat!  Is that okay?

Pat, so good to see your post.  M-m-m-m!  Fresh raspberries do sound good, especially in November!  Please don't overdo, I know "resting" gets very boring, but we do want you to be totally healed!  Love you.

I think I am on the mend now.  Not nearly as much coughing last night, and was able to get rid of a lot of mucus this morning, so throat feels better.  Still taking C and Zinc.

Etta Sue, I see you posted as I was typing.  I have those times (often) when I can't turn off my mind, and I think we do just as well by getting up and doing something until we feel sleepy.

Sunny this morning.  There is so much noise outside our front as they are working hard today putting in a new drain on the corner.  It gets icy and backs up on the sidewalk, not good for this mostly senior neighborhood & we bear the brunt of feeling like we need to keep the sidewalk safe.  Scary.

We voted by mail. We just want those elected to act wisely & think of all the people.

Larry:  iPod Touch.  I know they have been out for a long time but it sure is an amazing thing.  I don't want the phone on it - this is a refurbished 2 G model & all I will ever need.  We have twin ones.  We are trying to load our Windows calendar on it but it isn't working yet.

Etta Sue:  A normal day for you!

Janet:  I am sure that there are things you will never know about Beth in the way she has touched the hearts of others.  Even in your loving messages to us, you have brought about the thoughts of love and caring for those who have challenges :hbgift:.  Happy Birthday to Darrel -     Chicken soup for your cold.

Pat:  Oh, I would give up on knitting in another language  :D  I have bought stitch kits from Norway and Sweden & because they had pictures, I was able to figure things out.  But - oh, my gosh was it something to see the instructions.  Maybe you can download a conversion table but I imagine you do that well enough already.   Nope, I can't help you at all.  I don't talk Canadian.. :)  Where are you now?

Marilyn

I have  been out to the gym, stripped the bed and remade it, vacuumed the bedroom, took the dogs out for a potty break, and got my self ready to go to the podiatrist for a toenail trim.

I have to take Happy to the Vet  this afternoon at 3. So I won't get to go out to the beach today and the sun is shining looks like a great day for photography. Drat and double drat  :ticked:  It seems like I always miss out on the high surf photos.

The same happens on the fourth Tuesday of the month which is movie day for seniors. Some darn thing always comes up to prevent me from going, I have missed some fantastic movies too.

For those who have been praying for my son Ron to get that job, the latest is that now they are haggling  over the compensation benefits. He will have a company apartment to stay in while he is  in Virginia so his wife Christy will be able to go with  him. Thanks for the prayers.

I don't know what's wrong with me, I have days when I suddenly get tired and can barely keep my eyes open. It's like a wave of tiredness hits me then goes away. some days my knees pop a lot, like yesterday and today they are fine. You don't suppose I am getting old do you?

Hi Pat good to see you posting, I am another one who wishes she could help you translate your instructions from Canadian English to American English. I have Crocheted things just by looking at a picture  no instructions. One I saw a doily in the newspaper that I thought was so pretty and made it from the picture.

My cast comes off on Friday Yay! and the pic comes out then. I will be in a brace for awhile and I don't know if I will be having PT.

The weather isn't quite as bad as this kitten's weather....but it is getting there.

One plus to having a night of not sleeping is last night I didn't wake up or get up once during the night.  That's a plus and a first for me for many years!

Marilyn ~ I envy you to crochet from a picture.  Never could do that nor can I go anywhere new without a map!  Don't see how people do that either.  As you can tell, I read instructions!  But I will say that I have only had one crochet pattern that stumped me and I still think it was wrong!   ^-^

My laptop is coming around once I accepted that I couldn't retrieve things that I should have on the external.  At least I have the most important things on thumb drives...like all the things that are on the computer at church, my calender files and such.  I lost all my .pps files...I had 401 of them on the desktop that I have put on here so if any of you have new .pps files, send them on.  I love them!

I got the yarn exchanged.  The mother of the new baby does not like pink so I purchased bright orange!!  And the variegated that I have will be the outside trim.  I am thinking of putting the skeins and what I have done in a box and wrap it up and give it to her with a card inside that states 'I.O.U. one finished baby afghan so give this back to me!'  I might insist that she open it first and then I can crochet on it while she opens the other gifts!  It's not like I don't see the mom and dad...I see them every Sunday plus they live about 2 miles away.

I am all ready to take Ivalou to her doctor appointment today.  Then we will find something to eat and she wants to go to WalMart to find something for the new baby, too!

I am very happpy about the way the election went, except for a few races.  And I hope this sends a message about how WE the people feel about the excesses of the past two years.  They need to learn that you CANNOT spend your way out of debt!  Now if the newly elected just remember WHY they got elected when they get to Washington.

It looks like a nice day out there today.  I got up at 9:00, after getting about two hours' sleep.  Had a night of coughing and such.  Ugh.  I am getting tired.........

I have the washer and the dishwasher both going, so am staying on top of stuff here in the house.  Darrel has gone to Johnson on a trouble call.

I really need to go see Mom and Beth, but don't want to expose anyone at the home to this cold.  I think it's on its way out, but still don't trust that it isn't contagious.

May God bless each of you today is my prayer.

I agree, Janet, some of the election went well.  But here in California it didn't.  Jerry Brown, ultra liberal, spend, spend, spend appears to have won his race over Meg Whitman.  Senator Barbara Boxer also appears to have won.  God have mercy on our state.

Larry Hanna

Hi everyone from a very rainy and chilly Georgia.  We had a well attended Bible study this morning on the 6th chapter of John.  This was our second week on this chapter and have at least one more week before moving to Chapter 7.  As usual we went to the donut shop and then down the walk to the restaurant for lunch.  Came home and tuned on my electric blanket and got warm and took a nap.  I tried to watch the President's news conference but finally turned it off as was getting dizzy from the talk going in circles and really saying nothing.  I agree about the political ads seeming to hit a new low.  Everyone I have talked to was just sick and tired of the constant drumming of the same ads over and over.  I have to give credit to our Senator Isaakson who ran ads about what he believed and wanted to do as a senator and didn't tear down his opponent.  He won handily.  They were already beginning to talk about the race for 2012 so guess there will be no break.

Al, it is hard to see how your state can recover without the Federal government bailing it out.

Marilyn, surely we are not getting old!  Glad you will soon have the cast off your arm.

Carol, it sounds like your reaction is like mine on the iPod Touch.  I also didn't need the phone or the camera and the Touch is really a small computer that I can keep with me attached to my belt.  I have been looking at the new Barnes and Noble eBook reader but after looking at it realize with the Touch I already have the Nook reader as well as the Kindle reader and the Border's reader so really have no need just to have a bigger screen.  Glad you like yours.

Janet, my friend and I had a very nice day of visiting.  He was here about 4 hours and then realized that my voice was getting weak and realized it was time for him to go.  I was about to the point of gently telling him I needed to rest.  You wouldn't think talking could be so tiring but it really is.  After he left I immediately took a nap.  Carol, you never know we might someday have the opportunity to meet before we get to Heaven but if not we will just wait. Your comments concerning Beth are very nice and it is obvious that she is a sweet and caring person.

I have to miss choir practice this evening as have another commitment.  I always hate to miss the practice.

Carol

Tired after making 80 orange rolls for bible study group, then our table of ten went to lunch with the missionary we support.  She & husband are now moved to Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia and return after Christmas.

Voting was so stupid in our state and only a few of those who deserved to win this election did get win.  We call it the "herd mentality" out here. Big money from California pushed in here - Al, can't you do anything about it???  ;)

After lunch, a neighbor wanted to look for a few things shopping so I went along.  This was the 3rd. time I have set foot in the mall - you can tell I am not a shopper.  The huge parking lot was totally full.  I can't imagine why.

Larry:  It would be sweet to meet.  There are so many on S & F who I would love to meet.

Al Moak

Carol, if I could "do something about it" I would already have done it - and a lot more besides.  I've offered many times to be absolute dictator for six months, with the stipulation that I then have an island somewhere where I can live unmolested.  But nobody seems to be going for this idea.

Carol

Thank you, thank you!  All applause is duly noted, and will be reflected in improved grades.

Since I don't get a newspaper or watch the news on TV, I really don't know how Indiana did in the election.  I do know that Dan Coats is our Senator and that is good.  I jumped the fence and voted for a D-trustee in our township.  From all indications the R-trustee wasn't doing good for the community and Diane is a church member at Clarksville also.  Well, both of their names are Diane but God knows which Diane I voted for!!

I am a third done with my baby afghan.  Three days to go.  So I might just get it done by 3pm Sunday!!  That is if I don't sit here at the laptop until 6 pm each day!

Just doing laundry today and laptopping and crocheting!!

Janet

Al, California, Colorado, and possibly Alaska are the races I meant when I said some were not good results.  Well, at least California rejected legalizing marijuana for "recreational use."  Sheesh.

Here in Kansas, people are quite conservative, with just enough of the liberals to keep us on our toes!  I think every one of my votes counted toward wins this time, with the possible exception of some of the judges.  I voted to dump them all!  We don't get to vote for them in the first place, and several were adamantly pro-abortion, thus my decision on those.

I had another tough night.  I hope soon I will be able to sleep good again, as those nights wear a person down.  Looks like a lovely day outside, if only the wind doesn't come up.

I have several calls to make and emails to write, better get at it!

Hi everyone.  We continued to have rain yesterday and this morning, although very light this morning.  The sun is now coming out, which looks very good.

Had a busy morning.  After coffee went walking at the gym, then a quick stop at the Post Office and Credit Union.  Then I took my older car to Midas to have the back brakes checked as have been hearing a chirping sound.  They said it was just metal hitting metal on the back side of the pads and wasn't a safety issue or damaging to the car.  They could get rid of the noise for $69 or I could do nothing.  So I elected the second alternative.  Then stopped at the grocery store for a few items and to get a prescription for Pat.  I am about ready to rest as soon as I finish with the message boards.

Janet, in Georgia the judges are appointed by the Governor and then have to stand for election without a party designation.  You have to vote pretty well in the blind and most have no opposition.  All of our high State officials, including the Governor that were elected, are Republicans. Sure wish you could sleep well.  That is sure a problem I seldom have.

Etta Sue, I bet you get the afghan finished in time.

Carol, the orange rolls sound delicious.  I was hungry for citrus and got a bag of tangerines at the store this morning.  I just couldn't make myself pay $0.69 for one orange.  I have been fortunate to meet several of the former SN folks about 12 years ago.  It would have been nice to meet others but wasn't able to attend more than one of the SN Bashes.

Jeanne Lee

I never did get to any of the SN bashes and I've never met anyone here or S&F, either.  But there are a few people that when I stop to think of it, I'm surprised that I've never met them.   :D

Larry, here the judges are also appointed, then on the ballot it says "Should Judge So and So be retained in office?"  and we can vote yes or no. I usually vote no on all of them, unless I know something good about one or two, which seldom happens!

Glad to hear you feel pretty good today, and it is really a blessing to be able to sleep well.  Darrel sleeps good most of the time---day or night!  :)

Yes, Carol, those orange rolls sound wonderful!  May I have one?

I never got to go to any of the bashes, either, but did get to meet Pat when we went to Niagara Falls, and also her cousin Ruthie.  That was great!

I got most of my calls and emails done, now have a few more errands to do.

I just listened and read the following.  The music is absolutely beautiful version of the Lord's Prayer and the message is worth reading and taking to heart.  While the message is aimed at the USA, I believe it is relevant the world over.

Janet

I have been up for over two hours, coughing, sneezing and blowing.  And I thought I had this cold whipped.  But I refuse to let it whip me!  I do see the ENT doctor today, will ask him if there is anything else I should be doing.

I failed to mention Nevada.  Was really disappointed that Harry Reid was reelected.  :(   But we sure won the lion's share!!   :)
