Morning Devotional...

The Greatest Preacher Since Paul?

It is better to have self-control than to conquer a city (Proverbs 16:32, NLT).

Dear friends:

Some years ago, a young man emerged as a powerful evangelistic preacher. He was handsome, intelligent, and so exceptional that he was even courted by Hollywood.

After one eloquent sermon, he was described by the press as "the greatest preacher since the apostle Paul."

Ten years later, however, the young man was found dying of cirrhosis of the liver, too weak to continue supporting himself as he had been by selling trucks at a local dealership. Sadly, alcohol and financial irresponsibility were blamed for taking his life just days later.

Clifford lacked one essential quality necessary for sustained leadership: self-control. And it is the lack of self-control that frequently renders a disciple of Christ spiritually impotent and fruitless.

I once counseled and prayed with a husband and wife who were struggling with a problem of self-control in the area of overeating. Because of their overweight, they had lost self-confidence and were plagued with guilt. As a result, their witness for Christ was greatly hindered.

Then one day, while reading the Scriptures, they realized that their bodies were the temple of the Holy Spirit and that they were actually dishonoring the Lord by their lack of self-control.

In a spirit of brokenness, they prayed, "O, God, please help us. We have tried and failed again and again. Now you must help us. We invite you to control our appetites. Help us to be more careful in choosing the kind and quantity of food we eat."

In answer to their prayers of faith, God enabled them to discipline themselves. In time they slimmed down. Their self-confidence returned, and they again became bold witnesses for our Lord.

After counseling with thousands of people through the years, I am convinced that an undisciplined Christian cannot be an effective witness for Christ.

Do you lack self-control in some area of your life? You may not have a problem with alcohol or overeating, but you may be struggling with a critical spirit, with lustful thoughts, addiction to pornography, a feeling of defeat, an uncontrollable temper, or something else. Take it to the Lord in prayer. Ask for His help. Believe Him for the answer that you know is His will, according to 1 John 5:14-15: "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us -- whatever we ask -- we know that we have what we asked of him" (NIV).

God says, "It is better to have self-control than to control an army" (Proverbs 15:32, TLB).

Yours for helping to fulfill the Great Commission
each year until our Lord returns,

Bill Bright

:)   Al:   Thanks for the good devotional and it is always good anyway.  Bill Bright is a wonderful person and I remember when he came to our church in Toronto.  I hope that you are o.k.

Judy B. How are you feeling I hope that you are getting your strength back.   Take it easy sis. <3

To all others you all have a wonderful week and give it all to the Lord. :)

Thanks Al, for that great devotional.
I can relate to this in many ways.  Lately, I have been slack in my eating habits.  A few months back, I started eating better, healthier foods....then I started slacking off.  I can really tell the difference in the way I feel.  I have just recently started to get back on track with eating better.  When I do, I feel so much better.  I have to remember to lean on & trust in the Lord in this aspect of my life, too.  After all, as mentioned in the devotional, my body is a temple of the Lord.  I should treat it that way.  Now I just need to lay off the Starbucks coffee!   :coffee:
LOL!
I hope everyone has a blessed and safe week.  I start my 3rd week of my new schedule.  Still adjusting.  But I thank the Lord every day that I have a job, and one that really works for me to boot!
Prayers and Blessings,
Kelly

Hi everyone from a rainy Georgia.  It was rainy most of the day yesterday until late afternoon when we had a period with no rain.  Tomorrow is suppose to be dry and up to 71 degrees.

Nothing new to report on Stacey.  Her mother talked with her this morning and she was upset because she was suppose to be NPO last night and no one told her.  They were going to do a stress test this morning (I am assuming it would be a chemical one as she can't walk more than a few steps and would do terrible damage to her foot on a treadmill.  However, they had to cancel it as she started having chest pains again.  We tried to call a little while ago but she didn't answer so may be having some other testing done.  Thank you all for your prayers.  I know that God is in control and that allows me peace of mind even in times like this.  At this point I don't think we will be making a trip to Atlanta today.  I expect to go tomorrow afternoon as the man is coming to replace the batteries in her wheelchair at 2 pm.

Last night we had our choir chili show and talent supper.  We estimate somewhere between 200 and 250 people were in attendance and I think a good time was had by all.  The free will offering raised over $800, which will be used for choir needs and for special holidays when we need instrumentalist or special soloists.  I helped open many packages of hotdogs and then had to sit down as was having chest pains again.  We made it through our fun song that the men sang.  We were suppose to be sailors and it was a humorous song that seems to go over well.  The ladies did a number that used classical music, such as the 1812 Overture, as if it were sung by chickens (hens).  They wore their choir robes with yellow stoles and one of the choir ladies made little beaks that each of the women wore.  The pianist had tail feathers and paraded across the stage before sitting at the piano.  I took a few pictures and if any of them turned out I will see if I can post one.

I went to the gym this morning and was able to walk a half-mile without bringing on pain so am hopeful the new medication is starting to work (which it wasn't yesterday).  I am taking it twice a day.

Our housekeeper is here today and she is also has her beauty license and is giving Pat a haircut before starting the housecleaning.  I have a luncheon to attend at 1 pm.

Al, thanks for posting the Devotional for this week.

Marilyn

Good Morning My last three days that I am available are going to be filled with meals with friends, This morning I have been to Curves, I am going to Tai Chi, then at  11 I have Physical therapy at noon lunch in Eureka with my Chiropractor and another friend. Tomorrow it is breakfast with a friend, Taco dinner with Willa and her family. Wednesday I have to be here from 10-1 waiting for the Cable man to come pick up the HBO box and remote and my last PT appointment at 2:30. Somewhere in these three days I need to go recycle the last of the trash, finish packing, get my nails done and gas my car for the trip  to Oregon to pick up Keith. Whew I am already tired.

Have a great day y-all.

Al Thank you for posting that devotional for Janet.  You are such a blessing.

Kelly I hear you about eating right.  I tend toward eating too many carbs.  So I am trying to change those habits.

Have a good day everyone.

I had better hurry with this Good Morning.  It is almost noon!!!

Larry, so sorry to hear Stacy and yourself are having problems.  God Bless Both of You!

Marilyn, don't you wish your were Samantha on Bewitched?  Just wiggle your nose and you would be moved and settled in Oregon?

We are suppose to have nice warm weather this week in Indiana.  Spring is coming...one of God's promises...Seasons.

Nothing else new here!

This weeks devotional was speaking to me.

Judy:  Too many carbs for me as well.  I need to get back on track in a positive way.

Larry:  So sorry to hear of Stacy and her problems.

Marilyn:  You have a very busy time in the next few days.

I had made a phone call and changed an appointment and in a few minutes I need to make another to schedule an appoointment easy to do, then will hide in my corner with some knitting.  A sign of spring, Mel is out doing a little of the tree trimming and yard clean up and earlier I had been out chatting with our neighbor.

I will be on my way.    Ruth

Ruth Ann Bice

Hi, friends,

I've appreciated getting caught up on CP today. Now, it's time to head for the laundry room. I think, instead of a book, I'll take a magazine or two to read.

Someone called to ask me to do a bit of consulting for my old company. That's exciting!

And, someone else invited me to play the piano again for a devotional period the last of the month and also asked that I sing a solo at that time. Yikes! How many years since I sang in public???  ::)

Well, the laundry's sittin' here watchin' me, so I'd better quit procrastinating!  :D

JudyB

Ruth Ann I hear you about laundry.  I have a load to do as well and the girls have theirs to do as well.  I am on strike when it comes to their laundry.

Kass is making dinner, and Elizabeth is doing the fire.  I need to take Elizabeth to Dougs for the week to look after the boys.  This will give me some time to start renovations in her room.  I am wanting to paint it but have the walls to fix first.  They are the very old thin wood type of walls not plaster or drywall.  I just want to pretty it up for her.

Kass and I will have a good time alone together, one on one.  We are looking forward to that.

Ruth I have lost weight, but have more to go and the carbs are the hold back.

Must run

Carol

Al:  Thank you for devotions.  Food for thought!

I was reading posts in here this morning when Don came in a hurry to say that I had to get off the computer for his SKYPE teleconference - we were forgetting that AZ does not spring ahead on time.  Six hours he is on the phone with only a couple of breaks so I drove a friend to lunch and then a mall.  She bought grandbaby clothing for the baby arriving from South Korea in April.  Fun.

Marilyn:  Your move is getting close.

My cousin canceled tomorrow's lunch here - was going to make quiche for six of us and fruit salad.

Stay well everyone.

Ruth Ann Bice

Larry, I certainly hope your daughter's feeling better today - do please take care of yourself.

While I was waiting for the dryers to stop, my cell phone rang - my cousin on the 8th foor. "Ruth Ann, I cooked too many white beans this weekend, can you come by and get some?"

Well, OF COURSE I could!  We enjoyed an hour of chatting, singing hymns together with me playing her beautiful old fashioned upright piano and harmonizing with me on lead and her singing a wonderful alto.

What a delightful time we had!

Y'all have a great rest of the day.

Ruth Ann

Oh, by the way, the beans were delicious.
...his compassions fail not.  They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Carol I will come for quiche and fruit salad!  I love them both!

I am leaving in a minute for Dougs.  So I am off and will be back tomorrow.

Well, today is Katie's Krafters for Marbeth (they make quilts, lap robes, etc.), and I take her there then go over to "The Coffee Break" to read the paper and study a bit.  I've got to get all studied up, because it's this coming Sunday that I preach here.  We're going to be looking at the first Beattitude: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God."  I've got an outline ready, but I've still got to get me ready!  Then I'll go back over, get Marbeth, and we'll do our weekly shopping at the CoOp.  God bless all y'all.

Etta Sue

The luck of the Irish to you all!!  Ha!

What a beautiful day in Indiana!  Bright sunshine.  I hear birds singing and I see grass greening up!  I even see a hint of color on the bushes that will be budding soon!  I am thinking this might be a day to shut off the furnace, the fireplace and the solar heat...open a few windows and let in some fresh air!

But first, I need to go to church and install some images and clip art in the computers and go to the bank and make a deposit!

This afternoon is Euchre at neighbor Jane's house.  I just know that will be fun!

Also I downloaded Skype!  Rex, my classmate in Mexico, and I used Skype last night.  He asked me why we didn't do this sooner?  Well, I told him because a stubborn person in Mexico didn't want to download anything new on his computer!!  I know I mentioned Skype when I got my laptop last August because I have a sticker beside the built-in webcam and video calling never worked on MSN IM!  What a great invention!  Love the real time of it...no delays in voice or video!

That's it...not going to waste this great weather sitting at the computer all day!  Unless I take the laptop outside!!!  Hey, that's an idea!

:coffee: Help yourself - I am still groggy.  Usually, I bound out of bed and ready to go.

Al:  Can you explain "poor in spirit'?  It is wonderful to be blessed.  Such a good time and deed that Marbeth is experiencing with her craft group.

Judy:  A quiche is so easy to make that I wonder why I don't do it more often.  Once, someone made a quiche crust with hash browns - shredded potatoes in case you don't use the same words - and it was delicious.  I was going to do the same for a change.

Etta Sue:  You will love SKYPE.  I would do it more often but Don is on so many conference calls and until he stops this volunteer work, I just don't encourage anyone to call because sure as shooting, they would be calling at the same time he is online and it knocks him off.  That is the only downside.  Enjoy talking with your friend.

JudyB

Well Kassie has come in from her walk....she is so energetic.  I am heading out after I have eaten.  She takes her dog with her and runs her.  This is such good exercise for them both.

I have a load of laundry to do and Elizabeth has left her hamper in the laundry room I will do hers for her as well.

Must go,  Have a great day.

Marilyn

Top "o" the morning to all y'all. I am having  breakfast with a friend this morning, we are going to the Chalet for Biscuits and Sausage Gravy. Mmmm I love biscuits and gravy. Then tonight I am going to Willa's house for a Taco dinner. Getting my nails done after breakfast. Well the time is flying by and it is the day after tomorrow that I go up and get Keith. He has to work at least 'til noon on Friday, then we will head back here.

Happy St. Patricks Day

What a wonderful day:    MY Aunt had called yesterday saying that she was getting low on groceries, it was decided that we would go out today to enjoy the sun as well as shopping and have lunch together.

Now I am home and it is time to start dinner which will be my kind of Chinese & rice.

Judy: Loosing weight is so difficult but carbs & almost any kind of salt are a big block to reaching ones goal fast.   Drink water we must but I fail to do enough of.

Etta Sue & Marilyn:  I did some copy and paste to forward to a couple of shut ins that need some cheer.

Keep happy   Ruth

Ruth Carbs are the problem with me.  I have a medical condition that is aggrevated if I don't get enough carbs.  Too much water aggrevates it as well.  The meds I need are not covered by benefits and cost nearly $90 every time.  So I do struggle.

Taco's seem strange on StPaddy's day!  Irish stew and scons seem more appropriate!

Kass bathed 2 of 4 dogs today.  They are so soft and smell so fresh now.

Got to run God Bless
Judy

Larry Hanna

Hi everyone.  We had a most beautiful day here in Georgia and tomorrow is suppose to be as nice.

I left at 7 am this morning and it took me 2 hours, due to very heavy traffic, to get to Stacey's apartment to pick up a coat for her.  Then I picked her up at the hospital since she spent last night still in the hospital.  I got her to Grady Hospital for her 10 am appointment with the foot doctor.  She had x-rays that were taken a few days ago and the doctor looked at them and said she now has three broken bones in her foot.  No wonder it is so painful.  She will see him again in a month.  I took her back to her apartment and then headed home.  Think I will turn in early tonight and the day is catching up.

Happy to be able to say that I have felt fine the last two days.  I think the Renexa is keeping the pain at bay.

Carol

Larry:  Glad that you are feeling fine.  Now it is Stacey with more broken bones in her foot.  It is so difficult for her feet to heal completely.

My back is half in pain - along the right shoulder blade.  Yeow - what a day - and sneezing is painful.  Yes, am on an Aleve and also took 2 Ibuprofen pills later - it will go away in a day or two.  The shower feels best but I can't stand in that all day.

Arizona continues with this ten-year drought.  Huge fire danger and limited water.  Colorado has the same problems - this is really a challenge and I just wish that people would stop wasting our precious water.

Don fixed a pizza tonight & has been doing any and all lifting.  Taking it easy.  See you.

Carol - "poor in spirit" can be equated with humility before an awesome God.  Rather like Job experienced in Job 42:1-5.  It's when self has been taken out of the way enough so that we fall on our faces before the Lord of lords and King of kings.  If you'd like, and if you'll send me your email address, I'll send you the sermon in printed form.

Etta Sue

I got everything accomplished that I set out to do yesterday plus pruning my hibiscus and butterfly bushes.  I can't pick up sticks until I get the wooden cart emptied...best excuse I can think up at the time... ;)

Today Ivalou and I are going to Kokomo to see the photography at the Kokomo Art Association.  We are going to eat at Cracker Barrel...I want to get a Gift Certificate for my Secret Sister's birthday that is next week.

Then when I get back home, I need to do some laundry!

Carol

Al:  Yes, please send your sermon.  At the moment, I can't access my yahoo mail but am sure that it will be working soon.  Thank you.

Etta Sue:  Love that crazy cat.  Actually, our children used to love to play with the toilet paper - I should remind them  :D

Our landlord is bringing people through here to rent next year - we are not interested as it is far too long to be away from the family.  A high of 91* predicted in Phoenix today so Tucson will be hot as well - about 15* above normal.  My back is a tiny bit better but the pain is more spread out today - ugh.  Wish we were home & I had my own bed.

JudyB

Carol sorry about your back.  Have you been to a Doctor?  Interesting you would ask that question.  I have been studying the fifth chapter of Matthew and was looking at that phrase as well.

Our high today is to be +7 which translates to about 45F  that is good weather.  Our friend has sap running now so he will be busy for the next several weeks boiling down the maple sap.  His grands are with him helping.  they do so enjoy having the kids with them.  The entire family (son, daughter in law, and children) are muslim so this gives our friends a chance to portray Christ to them.

Larry I am sorry about your daughter and the problems she is encountering.  Also your health problems.  I am praying for both of you.

I have some jobs that I have been procrastinating on so I must get at them.  I will be back later.

Judy

Larry Hanna

Hi everyone.  I am eating a bite of lunch at the moment.  We attended Bible study this morning and then sent an hour or so at the donut shop with several friends.

One of the men I have known since coming to Grayson died yesterday.  He participated in our Friday Men's Coffee but a lung fibrosis condition develop and spent most of the last month in the hospital and rehab.  He had been having to use oxygen for the last 6-8 months and his doctor had told him he probably had 6 months to 2 years to live.  The funeral is this afternoon and I plan on attending.  He was in his early 80s.

This evening I have choir practice.

Carol, Stacey has a condition called Charcot that is a condition where the bones soften.   She has gotten to the point that just putting pressure on the foot can cause the breaking of the bone.  Sorry to read that you are not feeling well.  I agree with you that our own homes are the most comfortable place to be, especially when not feeling well.

Ruth

This morning Mel & I joined the coffee group at Tim's then later in the day I had 2 Medical appoointments.  Both were good news.

Yesterday Mel trimed an acorn tree/bush in the back yard, it looks much better.

Now we are waiting for a call from our daughter as we will be leaving for her home for an hour or so. Yes it is income tax time and she needs the paper work.

Good Morning  I am out of here in a few hours. I will be back after I get my computer up  in my new home. I am taking my computer up with me today, but will be back here tomorrow to  get the truck and load up on Saturday.

John is home today.  A little early but he has his miles in.  I have a stew in the slow cooker, so half of his meals for next week are nearly done.

We had a skiff of snow on the ground this morning.  Last night I couldnt sleep so found a book and read,  The dogs woke me at the normal time this morning so I lay back down and read a little longer.

Most of todays chores are done, just have a sweep fhrough to do, as well as another load of laundry.

We have a nice day sunny and we are seeing less snow and more ground.  Once the snow is gone then we can start waiting for the black flies.  That is the first sign of the nice weather!

I have been dwelling on Romans 6 today.  It is a good read!
