Title: New Gallery Software
Post by: Pat on May 12, 2008, 12:54:04 PM

Gallery2 Photo Gallery
A Possible Change for Christian Photographers

We are considering installing a new Gallery Software package.

Currently we have Coppermine which we've been using for several years but there's a new one that Oldiesmann has been working on a "bridge" to for the SMF Forum Software that we use and I'm quite impressed by this way of showing our photos.

One of the things that would have to happen though is that each of our current albums would be deleted and our members would start over again to upload their photos to the new gallery. This is our present gallery. (http://www.christianphotographers.com/gallery/index.php)

I'd like to know if this will be a hardship for you all.

I'm going to be posting a poll above and we'd really appreciate it if all of our registered members could answer the poll so that we could know if you would mind.

It just reminds me that our homes need a "Spring Cleaning" at this time of year and so maybe it is time for us to "Spring Clean" our albums on CP.  I'm sure that we all have a folder on our computer that has a copy of the photos in our albums here at Christian Photographers.  I have a folder on my hard drive entitled CP and each photo that I have in my albums here are in that folder so that I won't lose them.

Please also feel free to comment below.  Your comments may help others to decide and come to a decision.

As for attached photos in topics,
the preferable way to show a photo in a topic in our forums is to upload to your own webpage and link to it or if you don't have a web page or a place at a site like Photobucket, etc., then we'd appreciate your putting your photos in your album in our gallery so that our "Attached Folder" where all attached photos go doesn't get overloaded.

Thanks for considering this.

The new gallery software that we are considering is called "Gallery2 (http://gallery.menalto.com/)" and I've had a look at it and it's fantastic and has many more "bells and whistles" than our old Coppermine software has.

I've been thinking of this for some time now.  I have often thought about deleting my albums to make more room for others (of greater talent).

Thanks Amy!

And thanks for all who have voted so far.  As I think of this (IF we introduce the new software), I get excited.

I believe that we'll be able to have a wee slide show on our main page in the forum, etc.  Wouldn't that be nice?

I know that Oldiesmann will be able to share a few of the benefits of this new software as he's able.

This is wonderful so far.

I know that Oldiesmann is looking in so he'll be in charge of this move if it takes place.  Or rather in charge of this new installation--not move.  All should be putting their photos into their computer for sure in case we do it...

Even though I haven't posted here in a LOOOOONNNNGGGG time....I do stop by and see what is going on fairly regularly. I voted and I will say that on 5 of the web sites I manage, I use the Gallery2 software, and I can't say enough good about it; excellent product! One of the national racing papers I shoot for uses Coppermine in their online photo section and to me the difference is night and day in favor of Gallery2.

Thanks for that.  I know that Michael (Oldiesmann) will be happy to read that.  He's the one developing the "Bridge" to join the Forum software to our Gallery.  We need that in order to navigate between the two.

Thanks Larry and Ruth Ann.

Ruth Ann, you can still look at the photos even though you aren't a photographer ad this new software I believe will make that a treat!  ;)

Superb, Pat! And, before too many more days pass, I can take all the time I need to keep up on many of the discussions here at CP. Time has just been too short to participate as I should and would like to do.

Howdy Howdy

Yep, its sounds like a good time for some "clean up". The new forum looks good and it has a more familiar look to it as compared to other Photo sites, making it easier for folks to get around in it.  QUESTION: they offer different Themes for the layout, has one been decided on?

Ohhh, Tom!

How lovely to see you.  You have absolutely no idea how much you've been thought of.

We're sticking with this theme.  And then if the vote goes well for the new Gallery Software, the whole site should be wonderful.

Please don't be a stranger!

Thanks Pat, how kind.  It's good to see everyone and the many new folks and their photos. It's a blessing to have a clean place to go to as opposed to the sea of depravity one finds in the world today. God's Grace and Beauty is so great it stills shines through it all.

When Oldiesmann is ready to do this install, we'll write to everyone to make sure that they have copies of their photos on their computers so that they won't lose them.

Yes, they do have different themes for the gallery, though not all features are available in all themes (it's a bit different than with Coppermine).

Thanks Gabe.

If you go to the top of the page and click on "Gallery", that will take you to our current gallery and that's what we want to change to a beter system.

Great Scotty!  That's wonderful that you have copies.

There are still many who have to vote and some may be away.  I will have to write to them all but this will have to wait until after my wedding on May 24th

Also, it depends on when Oldiesmann has some time to do this.

One further update on this...

I have installed the new integration, but it's not working properly - it's dying somewhere in the process of trying to create a new account for me in the gallery. I'm not sure why, but I'm working on debugging it to figure out exactly what's going on and what I can do to fix it. Once that's working, I'll be configuring the gallery and applying some final tweaks to the forum. Hopefully this will be open soon, but I can't keep it open with a broken integration :)

Got the issue fixed - it was actually a simple issue, but took forever to fix because I forgot to enable the option to display errors from PHP.

Working on the configuration now and will post an announcement soon once everything is set up and ready to go.
