Title: A Garden in Progress (Backpacker)
Post by: Pat on January 17, 2004, 01:14:15 AM

Posting for Backpacker...

Alan has just become the new owner/renter (?) of an allotment and I hope that we see photos from time to time of how this venture goes.

From Alan... "Did I tell you I have just taken over a allotment that is a strip of land for growing veggies. Of course you know that.  £24 a year is not bad bit overgrown  but it will keep me out of mischief.

It was in the supermarket and I thought £1 for a small handful of beans no way.  More later on the great adventure at the allotment."

Alan............

Will they allow you to burn-off the weeds before you till it?  It would be good for the soil.

Sonja, just wear gloves!  ;D

Looks like more than dirty hands involved, though.  Looks to me as though at least a sore back is in the offing.   :-\

Well, the garden is looking good.  Looks like a lot of work has taken place.  Many years ago I used to plant gardens and would grow corn, beans, carrots, tomatoes, onions, etc.  But it has been many years since I have gardened.  Last year we even did away with Cornelia's flower garden because we can no longer to the work.

I would love to grow garlic here.  Never tried.  Is it hard?

Hi

Hope you are all keeping well.

The weeds are in full strength at the moment and that dreaded mares tail is growing faster than I can pull it out of the ground.  It is spread by rhizomes and seeds.  One very small black piece if left in the ground can soon multiply.

Garlic is easy you can even use the garlic you buy from the shops just break of the segments and plant.

I do believe the Western European garlic when grown is stronger than the garlic we buy from Spain etc.

Radish and spring onions are ideal for growing in containers.  I have a trough type container planted up with radish at the moment.  Something about salad crop fresh out of the ground you can taste the freshness.

Just planted another two blackberry bushes and ten raspberries.  Do we have any volunteers for making jam???

Papa John

Sad that you had to give up the workk in the garden.    At the moment I am nursing a very sore knee.   I do enjoy my gardening and my walking just have to take it easy I suppose.

Somebody said don't try to work all this plot in one year it has not been worked for a few years.  I can see what they mean.

Mick who I worked with a few years back has a plot alongside.  Same thing it is overgrown.

He called me over he had planted Parsnips.

Can you tell me what are the Parsnips and what are the weeds in this row.   Pass on that one.

Best wishes to all.

Alan

Hi Alan...   It was good to see your photos of your "Work in Progress" at the allotment!  I'm just getting started in my garden.  Ohhh, parsnips!  I think that parsnips were Jack's very favourite veggie.  After dialysis started he could no longer eat them as they were so high in potassium so they're good for you for sure!

I might try growing some garlic this year.

Keep sending your photos, Alan.  Hope your knee is better soon.

Hi

Firstly

We had a unbelievable amount of rain over here.  This resulted in a poor crop of potatoes on my plot anyway.

Onions came along so beautiful and have now stored well.  Along with the garlic.  Next year look out for Elephant garlic.

Garlic is very easy to grow and garlic grown in the UK is stronger than garlic grown in the hot climes of Greece etc.

I could eat garlic for breakfast and from comments passed I think they thought I had.

Even garlic brought from the store can be planted just break of the segments and plant.

Yellow tomatoes came along good.  I used comfrey out of the allotment comfrey has the ability to clean and extract nutrients from stagnant or foul water.

Comfrey tea can be used to feed tomatoes peppers and cucumbers.  Just add leaves to water and leave to cook in water for a few weeks.  Potass enrich comfrey will feed your plants.  Comfrey tap roots can grow down to ten feet.

Bad year for sweetcorn.  Beetroot was ok.  Beetroot cooking do you top and tail before boiling?  the plant does tend to bleed in th water does it not?

Raspberries good crop for a first year sadly some unknown virus has finished a few off.

Camera was away to be repaired when crop was at its peak.    Not to worry next year will be "the yea"

Volunteers required to turn in six tons of cow manure into plot.   Now no rushing please!
