Title: Hurricane Irene
Post by: Don on October 09, 2011, 07:23:39 AM
Well I finally decided to look at the photos I took during Irene. Up to this point I really hadn't wanted to see them.

The calm before the storm, Friday afternoon.

Watching from the back door, Saturday morning.

My neighbors house across the street. Major damage here.

The wind blew so hard it broke all the gates at RR crossings

House down the street from me. This house had wood shingles under the roll tin.

Water coming through my ceiling

Stay tuned more to come.

Don, how heartbreaking this all must have been - and still is, I'm sure.  :'( Thank you for sharing, difficult as it must be.

Don, I'm so very, very sorry.  Reminds me so much of Hurricane Hazel back in 1954 which devastated our area around Toronto.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the support everyone. I appreciate it.

Pat I remember Hazel, I was only three and about all I remember is all the trees that came down. Guess I wouldn't have remembered that if it hadn't been for the fact that my Dad had just given me a Red Flyer wagon and a big old oak tree fell right across it. Broke my heart. I'm just thankful that these didn't come down across my house. These are from my front yard.

Problem was that the ground got so wet. The trees all came down in probably the last two hours of the storm. We got seventeen inches of rain Saturday. I have a video of that big oak coming down. I shot it with my Sony F707 camera. It's not  as good as a video  camera but it was all I had. I will try to get it uploaded to youtube and post a link.

We live in an area where there is very little topsoil and the trees exist just over the bedrock. I have seen giant trees come down.... so devastating!!
To see what happened to your ferns helps us to understand what you are facing.... Love & many prayers are being offered up for you!!

Re Hazel, it's not common at all for our area to experience hurricanes and Hazel jumped over the coastal mountains in the USA and came right on up.  My brother was playing football for our high school and they just played on right to the end of the game as they didn't have a clue that a hurricane was happening and not just rain!  My grannies house basement was flooded and water coming out as the sump pump was overworked and I lost a girlfriend whose house was washed down the Don River down our street.

Pat I remember going to Granny's house and dad walking in water up to his knees...

Here is what happens to ferns when the electricity goes off and the fans go down when the sun is shining. It happens fast too.
