This male perched right in front of me as I was looking for wild ducks in the pond beyond him. No complaints! ;)

How big of a bird is he. Is his colouring ever beautiful!
What a great opportunity with which you were presented! They're difficult, at least for me, to get decent photos of since they're constantly and very quickly on the move. I get lots of blurry shots. This is very nice.

He's about 13-15 cm. The female is very shy and rarely presents herself for a photo session.

Thank you JimT, for your comment. Do you have the Daurian in Alaska? Or were you just referring to birds in general?
We don't have those here. My comment was to small birds in general. We have a lot of chickadees, nuthatches, and waxwings here. They're tough to get a real good shot of because they're constantly on the move.
Same problem I have. That is why I enjoy seeing what others can do!
I'm in the same boat. The only bird picture I think I've ever been able to get is the one of the catbird sitting on the nest. :)
