Beautiful!!!  How many shots did you take before you go this one?  I have tried and tried to get birds in flight and haven't done it yet!

Etta, I take about 25 shots for every one that I think is worth keeping.   My secret is, I never show anyone the other 24!

If you have a digital camera, take lots and lots of pictures, and then go over them to:

1. Find the ones that can be cropped and polished to perfection

2. Figure out what you don't like about the rest, and learn from it.

Also, I scout out good places.   This one was the result of being at a soccer tryout, when I noticed that a large number of egrets and herons flew over the park toward the marshes at the end of the day.   So I returned at the right time and got the shot.

Absolutely amazing!  I love this shot ... the clouds and the sun spotlighting the egret ... awesome.

Barbarian where do you live. There are lots of egrets around here where I am. I see them often sitting in the middle of the freeway in the grass, on the side of the freeway in the grass and the marshes, in the trees but never in flight.

That is one awesome  once in a lifetime shot. I love it.

These birds live in larger rookeries in swampy or isolated areas.  Look for them to be flying back late in the day, or out of the rookery early in the morning.

That's a great shot, Barbarian.  As Marilyn said, we've got lots of egrets around here.  Their rookery is right by the "Arcata Marsh Visitor's Center," and it's only about 6 miles from here.  I've seen them flying many times, and they are indeed wonderful to see.  Of course I never have my camera with me, and besides, when I see them I'm driving.  But I have been to the Visitor's Center, and sometimes you can see them there.  They don't float on the water, though, so you see them either standing or flying.

This is a fantastic picture, and it's pictures like this that make you want to try harder to improve your shots. Thanks for a great picture.
