Title: Owls on todays search
Post by: oneofhis on May 05, 2010, 04:09:39 PM
Every chance I get I search for wild life to shoot. This is today's capture. I knew of the nest. Last time I was there no owlet. What a blessing to get to shoot one. Hope this photograph looks as good posted as it does in PSE8. By the way I need constructive criticism.

Owls are one of the few native Kentucky birds I've yet to photograph.  You've done well here.  The background is a little noisy but the birds are spot on.

Thanks. I did not notice the noise until I posted. Later today I am going to try NRing it. I shot that at 500 Iso because the wind was blowing and I wanted to stop the ear feathers from motion blurring so much.

Wonderful shot.  Mother looks as though she's just daring you to get closer.   :D  Do they have only one baby?

It seems to me I have seen photos of more than one owlet in the nest. Truthfully I'm not sure. Here is a better edit. I way over processed the first.

I believe that the first one is better. The second one exposes the boards which give the impression that the birds are domestic. Although the second is sharper, I still think it's better to crop the boards out.

ScottyBoy, I tend to agree about the crop. The boards in the photo are the makings of an Osprey nesting platform. I believe the Fish and Game builds them. I have seen owls and even Canada Geese take them over. Sometimes the osprey will run the geese out. Altough I think a Canada could give an osprey a good fight.

OK I guess I am the odd one out.  I like the second one.  It is clearer, and less cluttered I think.  At any rate well done for even getting the picture.  Perhaps crop at the bottom of the nest!
