Morning Devotional...

Jesus Washes His Disciples' Feet
John 13:1-17 NLT

Before the Passover celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end.  It was time for supper, and the devil had already prompted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.  Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God.  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist,  and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples' feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.

When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"

Jesus replied, "You don't understand now what I am doing, but someday you will."

"No," Peter protested, "you will never ever wash my feet!"

Jesus replied, "Unless I wash you, you won't belong to me."

Simon Peter exclaimed, "Then wash my hands and head as well, Lord, not just my feet!"

Jesus replied, "A person who has bathed all over does not need to wash, except for the feet, to be entirely clean. And you disciples are clean, but not all of you."  For Jesus knew who would betray him. That is what he meant when he said, "Not all of you are clean."

After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, "Do you understand what I was doing?  You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and you are right, because that's what I am.  And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other's feet.  I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.  I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message.  Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.

What is the greatest service someone has done for you?  How do you serve others?

Jesus was the model servant, and he showed this attitude to his disciples.

Washing guests' feet was a job for the household servant when guests arrived.  But Jesus wrapped a towel around him, as the lowliest slave would do, and washed his disciples' feet.

If even he, God in the flesh, was willing to serve, we, his followers, must also be servants, willing to serve in any way in order to glorify God.

Are you willing to follow Christ's example of serving?

   Whom can you serve today?

The question is:  What is the greatest thing someone has done for you?  Well, I will never forget the kindness of a friend who arranged three weeks of dinners by her and even strangers (to us) when I had back surgery and our oldest son was recuperating from a roll-over car accident the same time Don was beginning a brand new job - this was in Texas.  Unbelievably kind of all.  As for me, I really try to get a meal over to new parents - anyone who needs some pick-up or at least a loaf of fresh bread ever since that very thoughtful gift.

We had the early surprise birthday.  What a terrific day - I was exhausted when it was over.  Don went to see one son's cabin in the mountains, all three boys went with him.  Friends drove here, they are so good and thoughtful (and, most of them voted for the winner) but we forgive them  :)  A perfect surprise - Don was so happy and still talks about yesterday.  Today, we were awake at 4 A.M. so stayed up to watch the sunrise and went to 7:30 church.  We were both getting too drowsy to stay for SS so had to come home for a morning nap of only a few minutes.  But - I suppose someone would have noticed if we had fallen asleep in SS.   ::)

Ed:  What a wealth of info on my favorites - Roy & Dale.  My skin is so sensitive that I have to mix half the hydrocortizone with cold cream.  A pharmacist gave me that tip once.

JudyB:  Teaching sewing - what a treasure you are for the girls.  They will always remember you.  And, you have a girlfriend who is a pastor!  That is so nice.  I know a couple of women pastors and they have to prove their faith and work so much.

Kathleen:  Glad you are feeling better - keep it up!  Happy Trails to you too - and enjoy the biscuits and gravy.  We have found the Pioneer gravy mix is very good with 1/4th pound of cooked sausage in it for taste.

Larry:  My prayers to you and Pat concerning Stacey.  Her condition is so fragile.

Marilyn:  I wish so much that I could have gone to that museum - just have loved those folks since childhood.  Ouch - I hope you didn't break your tailbone.

Janet:  email your European trip, please.  My prayers for Beth.

Janet:  If Roy Rogers stuff is being moved to Branson, then, I must visit some day.

Al:  Hi - just saying hello.

Also, I asked for info on a hotel or motel in Seattle for my class reunion and would you believe this - a classmate sent a picture of her guest bedroom and offered it for our one or two night stay.  Just so sweet.

The goodness of people - it is so wonderful.  We are feeling so "up" today - the sermon was on Discipleship and bringing up the next generation in the ways of the Lord.

Janet

Thank you for the comments on my trip report.  Do any of you have suggestions or tips that might make the next one better?  I am working on improving my writing skills.

Carol, it is on the way, as soon as I finish this!  Glad your party was such a success.

Etta Sue, nice devotional for this week, thank you.

I suppose one of the greatest things people did for me and my kids was bring meals to us for 6 weeks while my wife was in the hospital.  She almost died twice during that time.

As for the Roy Rogers Museum, It has already been moved to Branson, Mo

My question is:  Have you participated in a "Foot Washing Service?"
What a humbling experience, having someone wash my dirty smelly feet.

Foot Washing -  Most humbling experience you'll ever have.

Wish we did this at the church we go to now.

Larry Hanna

Hi everyone.

There have been so many nice things people have done for us it is hard to think of a particularly special one.  I know that when my folks died I really appreciated the ladies of the church where my folks attended doing the luncheon after the service.  It was so thoughtful and it gave the family time to sit and visit with relatives we hadn't seen for a long time.

We will leave shortly to go to the hospital.  Stacey's cath is scheduled for 2 pm so she will likely spend the night at the hospital after the procedure since it is occurring so late in the day.

Janet, I really enjoyed your report.  You write very well.  The only thing I can think of that would make the report better would be to put it in a Word Processor and insert some of your photos of the things you were describing at appropriate places.  Obviously that is a lot of work.  I really appreciated your sharing it with all of us.

Etta Sue, thanks for the new devotional for this week.

Janet

Larry, I would love to do just that--if only I knew how!  :-[

Etta Sue, I love that particular story of Jesus.  Thank you!  However, there is something about it that we usually miss.  And even those who have "foot washing" in their church services often miss it also.

In the days when Jesus walked this earth, the roads were not paved, and the shoes were not comfortable, laced-up leather ones with souls.  Add to these things the fact that there were no automobiles, busses, cabs, etc.  Only a very few could even ride horses or mules.  The common folk simply had to walk everywhere they went.  They NEEDED to have their feet washed when they finally arrived at your door.  Jesus took the job of the servant to do the washing, because He WAS the suffering Servant.  Oh, what a Servant!  But in the presence of laborers who had worked up a sweat, He would have offered to wash them as well.  When in the presence of other laborers whose backs were sore, He would have offered massage.  In the presence of tired men, He would have dragged up chairs and placed cushions behind tired backs.  In the presence of the thirsty, He would have offered cold water.

Love is humble and sacrificial service - of any kind.  Is the Spirit of Jesus Christ in us?

Carol

Al:  Your post on the practical and loving, humble side of Jesus washing of the feet of the travelers is so interesting.  We don't think of such things today.  Hospitality was much more personal in those days and probably servants washed the feet or brought the refreshments so it is more meaningful just to read that Jesus was the most humble person who walked this earth.

Carol

We had all kinds of food on Saturday and now I am planning for Thursday night Dinner Club.  My job is to make Chilled Vichysoisse soup,(It is potato and leek soup that has cream and chives), Swedish Meatballs with Gravy, Spiced Pickled Beets, and a Potato,Carrot, Rutabaga casserole along with Rolls & Butter.  The guests bring salad and dessert.  After that meal, it is time to think about Thanksgiving dinner with the family here.  Only one son-in-law and he will be flying to Texas to be with his parents and other than that, all will be here.  We will take neighbors to pre-Thanksgiving service as they have problems driving in the dark.

Tonight, we will go to a potluck and watch one grandson get his Scout Life award.  Don has two volunteer meetings this week - the days are filling up.  We had a great walk this morning and it is so warm that it is scary.  Then, drove to several places and went to the huge mall for the first time.  Did not buy one thing.  Totally outrageous prices.  Went to Goodwill and I found a nice cabinet with shelves for my sewing closet - my kind of price.

Marilyn

Hi everyone I arrived home at 11:45 AM and all is well, the dogs were certainly glad to see me, they have had their walks, I am all unpacked and now to brush Happy. he sure need it.

I will be back later

Hi everyone.  It is really cold here this morning, below freezing, and suppose to only get into the mid 40's today and cold again tonight.

Stacey had her cath done yesterday and the results were not good at all.  The bypass she had done about 3 months ago is totally blocked and therefore useless.  This is for a blockage that is somewhere between 80 and 90 percent blocked.  Plus there is another blockage in another artery that is over 60% blocked and this is located right where the artery enters the heart and the cardiologist said it cannot be stented because if it blocked it would cut off the blood supply to the heart.  So she will have a double by-pass surgery as soon as they can get the Plavix out of her system.  So it will be at least Friday and probably the first of next week before the surgery can be performed.  Because she needs the nitro drip she must stay in the hospital and very quiet until the surgery.

She was upset by the news but seemed to be more so when we told her we were not leaving town to go to Florida as will not go off and leave her in the hospital by herself.

We will pack up today and stay the next several days at her apartment, which is located right across the street from the hospital rather than make these long drives back and forth.  Yesterday afternoon I walked from the hospital over to her apartment, probably about two blocks in total.  We will be spending quite a bit of time with her to help the hours pass.  Fortunately they have public internet access in the hospital so I will take her computer over to her and she should be able to watch movies on it, have access to her own telephone and e-mail and can play some games.  The hours in the hospital go slowly.  She is in a private room.  This is not the same hospital where she had the other bypass.

We had quite a time trying to get the word to the doctor she was suppose to see yesterday afternoon for another appointment for disability.  Finally after her cath we were able to track down the person she needed to talk to that is adjudicating her disability case and he was going to handle things and set up a subsequent appointment.

I will take my laptop with us today and am going to get a computer case on wheels so I don't have to carry it.  Fry's have them for about $20 so will stop on the way downtown today so I can take it with me to the hospital.

I will stay in touch here on a daily basis.

Marilyn

Good Morning: Boy did I ever sleep good last night. I went to bed at 8PM, probably was asleep by8:30, woke up long enough to look at the clock just after midnite, went right back to sleep and woke up at 4:26, so I sure got my 8 hours of sleep last night, that hasn't hapened in a long tiem.

Larry I am praying for Stacey. I am so sorry to hear that she is having so many  blockages and has to have bypass surgery at such a young age.

Thank you all so much for the comments of the devotion.  I have never attended a foot washing ceremony.  I used to think my feet were the ugliest part of my body and was ashamed to show them to anyone.  As I get older I think my feet are pretty good looking!   ::)  I know.  That isn't the purpose of a foot washing.  I will just add that with those past thoughts for me to have some wash my feet would be humbling to me as well as me washing someones feet.

Larry ~ I wasn't expecting to read that Stacy needs bypass surgery.  What an ordeal all of you have gone through.  My prayers are for you all.  I sure didn't know that they had laptop cases on wheels.  Good idea!

Janet ~ If you have Microsoft Word, you can insert pictures in it and even size them by using the deformation corners.  I agree, some pictures would add interest since most of us will never ever see these sites ourselves.

Carol ~ You seem to be adjusting to your new area quite comfortably.  And you certainly tend to be a busy person serving others.

Marilyn ~ I know your dogs are happy to see you when you walk in the door.  Cats are different.  My two acted like they were afraid of me when I came home after being gone three days.  But soon, they realized I was the one that would feed them and cried until I put food in their bowls!!

Al ~ Thanks you for the explanation of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples and tending to the other servants as well.  Today we tend to forget about the lack of transportation and what the dress code was in Jesus' day.  Jesus probably got the water from the well himself also.

Ed ~ You and I tend to think alike in being humbled if someone washed our feet.

Samantha ~ I, too, wish my church would have a foot washing ceremony.  That would be a humbling experience to experience what Jesus did for mankind.

I awoke this morning to beautiful sunshine!  It is remarkable how sunshine makes one feel better.  We have had about 4-5 days of cloudy, gloomy weather.  Even though it was in the mid-20's it seemed so much warmer.  We had some snow flurries yesterday but no accumulation.  I turned on the radio and they were talking about some accidents on the interstate to Chicago due to ICE!!!  And that northwest Indiana (Chicago/Gary area) has 9 inches of snow!!!  I guess it was bound to happen.... :-\

Marilyn

When I unlocked the door upon my arrival in Oregon the cat was right there waiting for whoever was coming in the door. He follows Keith everywhere, and cries at the door when Keith goes out. He slept with me part of the night, right next to my pillow and  when I got up he immediately wanted me to feed him, when went straight to the fridge and meowed louder than usual.

OK everyone sometime in March is the date. Haven't decided the exact date yet.

Larry, I'm so sorry to hear of Stacy's ongoing health concerns.  So good that her apartment is located so near the hospital though.  That makes is much easier for you.  I will be praying for you all.

It's another beautiful day here.  We've had warmth and sunshine, but rain is forecast for Thursday and on into the weekend.

Today needs to be a dog bath day for us.  I'm not sure it'll get done, but they are so dirty.  It doesn't take long with white dogs.  Poor Tyson's tail is all matted so I need to cut that off.  They are the same litter, but Rocko doesn't get matted like Tyson.  His hair is softer.  He's also the smaller, so must be more maltese than Westie.

But for now..........it's my turn to jump in the shower. :)  Nita

Today's clean humor from Crosswalks"

*Oriskany Falls*

The little old lady seated herself right behind the bus driver. Every ten minutes or so she'd pipe up, "Have we reached Oriskany Falls yet, sonny?"

"No, lady, not yet. I'll let you know," he replied, time after time.

A few minutes later, she piped up again "Are we there yet, sonny? Have we reached Oriskany Falls?"

Once again, he replied "No, not yet. I'll let you know when we get there!"

The hours passed, the old woman kept asking for Oriskany Falls, and finally the little town came into view.

Sighing with relief, the driver slammed on the breaks, pulled over and called out, "This is where you get out, lady."

"Is this Oriskany Falls?"

"YES!" he bellowed. "Get out!"

"Oh, I'm going all the way to Albany, sonny," she explained sweetly. "It's just that my daughter told me that when we got this far, I should take my blood pressure pill."

Pretty exciting around here today with me doing all the jumping and Tyson's tail missing. :)

Janet

Jeanne and Nita, thanks for the grins!  :)

Larry, prayers are going up for you and family.  I hope Stacey gets along well, what an ordeal for all of you to go through again.  I'm so sorry.

I went to Grandparents' Day at school for my Youth Friends this morning.  Their elementary school has grades 3, 4 and 5.  They have a young man who teaches music and band, and he had the kids perform for us, each age group.  He's doing a terrific job with that mob of kids!  I was impressed.

After the little program, we went to the classrooms with the kids.  I spent half the time with Diana, then went to spend the rest with Juana.  It's amazing all the technology the teachers are using today....and every kid has a laptop computer!

After lunch I came home, picked up Sarah the puppy and took her to visit Beth.  I spent a couple hours with her, reading to her.  Then took Sarah to visit other residents.  She really enjoys all the attention, petting, even kisses she gets from residents and nurses there.  Someone always asks if she is the dog the residents will get to keep when they move into the new care home.  NOPE.

I emailed my trip story to the Ulysses News, then took in some photos to go with it.  They were excited to get it, and said they will publish it.

Good morning It is raining here this morning and it looks like It going to continue all day.
But it is warm for this time of year so I can't complain.

I am on my way to our ladies prayer meeting.

Larry-I will remember your daughter in prayer and will bring  Stacey need to our prayer meeting this morning so that there will be others lifting her up in prayer. God bless and strengthen you and your wife.

Good Morning everyone.

Larry praying

I have read all the posts.  but Iam not commenting, except tosay I think Nita has had her exercise!

The trees are bowed down with snow.  Kass was looking at them and commented that the Bible says even creation will bow down before our Lord.  I wonder if the trees will look like this?

Well a busy day today.  Lots to do.

Have a great day everyone.

Larry:  Praying for you, Pat and especially for Stacey.

Marilyn:  Why wait?  Think of all the gas money you will save by not going back and forth  :D

Etta Sue:  I have heard that dogs don't have a sense of time.  Could this be the same for cats?  The cats are just trying to mess with your mind & showing you that they don't care  ;D  Isn't it interesting?  We really don't know.

We had such a fright on Monday night's potluck meal at Scouts.  Our DIL is highly allergic to either MSG or pine nuts.  One Mexican family made a dish with pine nuts (they use them a lot) and apparently our DIL had one bite of this without knowing - she immediately had trouble breathing.  She carries Benedryl and we were with her in the hallway watching to see it take effect - it did and she returned to normal very quickly.  Thank you Lord!  We are so fortunate to have such a loving DIL - all the girls are so wonderful to us.

Janet:  I have lots of time and want to make a special quilt for the Eagle award.  Found a cotton panel with two eagles and mountain/sky background.  Now to think of how to frame this on a quilt.  This g-son has also been chosen for a leadership conference back east sometime.  12 - going on 21.  By the way, your trip was so interesting.  Thank you.

Well, back to cooking.  Wish you could all taste some of this.

Whew!  I think all my email friends emailed me today with personal emails and forwards.  I had 45 of them today!!  Just got done reading and replying.  Now I am talking with my high school classmate in Mexico on IM.  He is having such terrible health problems.

Finally it is sunny in Indiana today.  It is right at the freezing point so cold and windy!

Not planning on going anywhere today...need to stay warm!!!

I voted, messed up a little, as didn't recognize the title of one I intended to vote for, but......that's life, I guess.

I did walk/run intervals on the treadmill at the Sr. Ctr. today.  Been a little lax on my exercise, and that's not good.  My blood pressure was inching back up again.

Etta Sue, I get so many emails, just wish they were personal or forwards from friends, instead of so much junk.  Stay warm!  They are predicting our weather to change for colder soon; it has been wonderfully warm here.

I am framing four of my prints of the Nativity, Diane has three already sold for me!!  Yea!!  That's so nice.

I'm reading a really good book by Nicholas Sparks, think I'll get off here and go read a while.
